The Parents - Anjana and Kesari

Hanuman was born to Mata Anjana and Kesari, the mighty vanara king of Kishkindha. Anjana was an apsara who, due to a curse, had taken birth as a vanara, and she would be freed from the curse upon giving birth to a divine child. The couple performed intense penance to Lord Shiva, praying for a son with the strength and virtue of the lord himself. Their devotion set the stage for one of the greatest divine births in all of Hindu scripture.

The Boon of Vayu and Shiva

At the same time, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed the Putrakameshti yagna for sons, and the divine payasam (sacred pudding) was distributed to his queens. By divine plan, a portion was carried by the wind god Vayu and placed into Anjana's hands as she prayed. She consumed it, and through the blessing of Vayu and an amsha (portion) of Lord Shiva, Hanuman was conceived. This is why Hanuman is revered as Vayu Putra (son of the wind) and as a Rudra avatar of Shiva.

    The Birth of Anjaneya

Hanuman was born on a hill in Anjaneri (some traditions say Kishkindha), and was named Anjaneya after his mother Anjana. From birth he was extraordinarily strong, golden in hue and full of restless divine energy. He is celebrated on Hanuman Jayanti, which falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Chaitra. His birth fulfilled the penance of his parents and freed Anjana from her curse, marking the arrival of the greatest devotee the world would know.

    Baby Hanuman and the Sun

    Baby Hanuman and the Sun

As a hungry infant, baby Hanuman mistook the rising sun (Surya) for a ripe fruit and leapt into the sky to eat it. Seeing this, Indra struck him with his vajra (thunderbolt) on the jaw, and the child fell unconscious. Enraged, Vayu withdrew all air from the world. To pacify Vayu, the gods revived the child and showered him with boons - immortality, invincibility and immense power. The name Hanuman comes from hanu (jaw), marking this very event.

    Significance of Hanuman's Birth

Hanuman's birth shows that devotion, strength and humility can exist together perfectly. Though blessed with limitless power, he chose to use it entirely in service of Lord Rama, becoming the ideal bhakta. His janam katha teaches that true strength is guided by purpose and surrender. For devotees, recalling his birth is a source of courage, protection and the confidence that sincere devotion is never wasted.

    Hanuman Birth Mantra

On Hanuman Jayanti and Tuesdays, devotees chant the simple yet powerful mantra:

    Om Hanumate Namah

A beloved invocation honouring his birth is:

Manojavam Marutatulyavegam, Jitendriyam Buddhimataam Varishtham. Vatatmajam Vanarayoothmukhyam, Shri Ramdootam Sharanam Prapadye.

Chant with devotion, light a lamp of til oil and offer sindoor and laddu to invoke Bajrangbali's blessings.
