The Parents - Anjana and Kesari

The Boon of Vayu and Shiva

At the same time, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed the Putrakameshti yagna for sons, and the divine payasam (sacred pudding) was distributed to his queens. By divine plan, a portion was carried by the wind god Vayu and placed into Anjana's hands as she prayed. She consumed it, and through the blessing of Vayu and an amsha (portion) of Lord Shiva, Hanuman was conceived. This is why Hanuman is revered as Vayu Putra (son of the wind) and as a Rudra avatar of Shiva.

The Birth of Anjaneya

Hanuman was born on a hill in Anjaneri (some traditions say Kishkindha), and was named Anjaneya after his mother Anjana. From birth he was extraordinarily strong, golden in hue and full of restless divine energy. He is celebrated on Hanuman Jayanti, which falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Chaitra.
