Who Is Jyeshtha Gauri and Why She Visits
Jyeshtha Gauri is Mahalakshmi - Parvati in her Gauri form - welcomed into Maharashtrian and Konkani homes during Ganeshotsav as Ganpati's mother coming to visit her son. Two Gauris are installed, Jyeshtha (elder) and Kanishtha (younger), often as masks on decorated frames, brass faces or khade (standing) forms. Legend says the Gauris were invoked by women whose households were troubled by asuras, and Mahalakshmi restored their prosperity, which is why the festival is closely tied to family wellbeing and abundance.
Jyeshtha Gauri 2026 Dates
The three days follow the nakshatras Anuradha, Jyeshtha and Mula in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, during the Ganpati stay:
- Gauri Avahan (welcome) - Wednesday, 16 September 2026
- Gauri Pujan (main worship and mahanaivedya) - Thursday, 17 September 2026
- Gauri Visarjan (farewell) - Friday, 18 September 2026
Avahan is done after the nakshatra begins, traditionally in the evening. Confirm the nakshatra timing with your local panchang, since the welcome must not be done before Anuradha starts.
Gauri Puja Vidhi Step by Step
1. Avahan day - clean the house, draw rangoli and small footprints from the doorstep to the puja room. Bring the Gauri masks or forms in from outside, stopping at the kitchen, water pot and grain store so she blesses each. 2. Ask 'Gauri, what have you come with?' and answer 'With wealth, grain and prosperity' - the traditional exchange at the threshold. 3. Seat the Gauris beside Ganpati, dress them in saree, ornaments, bangles and flowers, and light the lamp. 4. Pujan day - offer haldi-kumkum, flowers, a garland of durva and the sixteen-item shodashopachara puja, then the mahanaivedya. 5. Invite married women for haldi-kumkum in the afternoon and gift them oti - blouse piece, coconut, rice and turmeric. 6. Visarjan day - offer curd-rice or khirapat, do the final aarti, and immerse or respectfully put away the forms, asking her to return next year.
The Traditional Mahanaivedya
Gauri Pujan is famous for its full-plate offering, cooked without onion and garlic: puran poli, sixteen types of bhaji (or at least five), ambil or kadhi, rice with ghee, karanji, chakli, coconut chutney, papad, koshimbir and a sweet kheer. Families place sixteen durva blades and sixteen betel leaves with the plate, matching the sixteen forms of the shodashopachara. Simplify freely if the full menu is too much - one lovingly made puran poli with rice and bhaji is a complete offering.
