    What Is Kajari Teej

Kajari Teej is one of the three great Teej festivals of the monsoon, alongside Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej. Known as Badi Teej in Rajasthan and Satudi Teej for its famous sattu offering, it is a day when married women keep a vrat for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands, and unmarried girls pray for a good life partner. The festival is woven with kajari folk songs, swings under monsoon clouds and the evening worship of the moon.

Tithi and When It Falls in 2026

Kajari Teej is observed on the Tritiya (third day) of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha, three days after Raksha Bandhan and five days before Janmashtami. On the Gregorian calendar this usually falls in August. As the tithi and moonrise time change every year and by city, please confirm the exact date, puja muhurat and moonrise timing on the Vandnaa Panchang.

    Kajari Teej Vrat Katha

The traditional katha tells of a poor Brahmin's wife who kept the Kajari Teej vrat with full faith. The custom required offering sattu to Neemdi Mata and the moon, but the family had nothing. The Brahmin, moved by his wife's devotion, went out into the dark night to gather chana and wheat, ground them into sattu, and the couple completed the puja with a borrowed lamp. Pleased by their faith in poverty, Neemdi Mata blessed the home, and prosperity, harmony and children's happiness filled their lives. The katha teaches that the goddess sees devotion, not wealth.

Who Keeps the Vrat and Why

Married women (suhagins) keep the Kajari Teej vrat praying for their husband's long life, health and a happy married life. Unmarried girls observe it to be blessed with a loving and worthy life partner. In many families the fast is nirjala (without water) until the moonrise puja, though women who are unwell, pregnant or nursing keep a gentler falahar vrat. The day is also a celebration of sisterhood - women gather in fine clothes, apply mehendi, swing on decorated jhulas and sing kajari songs of love and longing.

    Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

The unique feature of Kajari Teej is the worship of the neem tree as Neemdi Mata: 1. Bathe in the morning, wear new or clean festive clothes, and take the sankalp of the vrat. 2. In the evening, prepare a small clay or cow-dung platform near a neem branch planted in a pot or near a neem tree; make a small pond-like depression beside it and fill it with water. 3. Adorn Neemdi Mata with chunari, roli, mehendi, bangles and a lamp; offer kajal, sindoor and fruits. 4. Offer sattu (roasted gram or wheat flour mixed with ghee and jaggery), cucumber and seasonal fruits. 5. Looking at the reflection of the lamp and the offerings in the water, pray for your family's happiness. 6. After moonrise, offer arghya of water and sattu to the moon, then break the fast by tasting the sattu, traditionally given by the husband or a family elder.

Kajari Songs, Sattu and Cow Worship

The festival takes its name from kajari, the soulful monsoon folk songs of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan that sing of dark clouds, swings and a wife's longing. In Rajasthan, many families first feed sattu and rotis to a cow before the women break their fast, honouring Gau Mata. Sharing sattu among family and neighbours after the moon puja is considered the prasad of the vrat.

    Mantras, Niyam and Benefits

    During the puja, chant:

Om Umamaheshwarabhyam Namah - for the blessings of Shiva and Parvati as the ideal couple.

Om Som Somaya Namah - while offering arghya to the moon.

Niyam: keep the mind calm and speech sweet through the day, avoid grain and salt until moonrise if keeping the traditional fast, and do not break the vrat before the moon is sighted. Benefits: the vrat is believed to grant the husband's long life, marital harmony, the goddess's protection over the family, and for unmarried girls, the blessing of a good match.

    Reader Questions Answered

    When is Kajari Teej observed?+

Kajari Teej falls on the Tritiya of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha, three days after Raksha Bandhan, usually in August. Confirm the exact date and moonrise time on the Vandnaa Panchang.

Why is the neem tree worshipped on Kajari Teej?+

On Kajari Teej the goddess is worshipped as Neemdi Mata in a neem branch or tree. The vrat katha centres on her blessing a poor devoted couple, and neem itself symbolises healing and protection.

What is the role of sattu in Kajari Teej?+

Sattu mixed with ghee and jaggery is the main offering to Neemdi Mata and the moon, which is why the day is also called Satudi Teej. Women break their fast by tasting sattu after the moonrise arghya.

Is the Kajari Teej fast nirjala?+

Traditionally many women keep a nirjala fast until the moonrise puja. However, those who are unwell, pregnant or nursing may keep a falahar vrat with fruits and water. Devotion matters more than severity.

How is Kajari Teej different from Hariyali and Hartalika Teej?+

Hariyali Teej falls in Shravan Shukla, Kajari Teej in Bhadrapada Krishna and Hartalika Teej in Bhadrapada Shukla. Kajari Teej is unique for its neem worship, sattu offering, kajari songs and moonrise arghya.

Can unmarried girls keep the Kajari Teej vrat?+

Yes. Unmarried girls keep the vrat praying for a loving and worthy life partner, following the same puja of Neemdi Mata and the moonrise arghya with sattu.
