What Is Kanyadaan?

Kanyadaan (kanya = daughter, daan = the sacred act of giving) is one of the central and most moving rituals of a Hindu wedding. In it, the parents - traditionally the father, with the mother beside him - lovingly place their daughter's hand into the hand of the groom, entrusting her to him for a life of shared dharma.

In our tradition, daan (selfless giving) is a supremely virtuous act, and the giving of one's beloved daughter is honoured as the highest of all daans (Kanyadaan Mahadaan). The ritual is not about 'giving away' in a diminishing sense; rather, it is a sacred entrusting done with love, blessing and prayer for the couple's happiness. It is accompanied by Vedic mantras and heartfelt blessings, and is regarded as an act that brings great merit (punya) to the parents. It is among the most emotional and beautiful moments of the vivah sanskar.

The Deeper Significance

Kanyadaan carries layers of beautiful meaning within the vivah sanskar:

  • The highest daan: Giving one's daughter's hand is honoured as the greatest act of selfless giving, believed to bring immense merit and blessings to the parents.
  • A sacred trust, given with love: The parents entrust their most precious treasure to the groom, and by tradition the groom promises to honour dharma, artha and kama together with her - a promise of respect and partnership.
  • The divine couple: In the ritual, the bride is often revered as a form of Goddess Lakshmi and the groom as a form of Lord Vishnu (or Narayana), so the union is seen as sacred and auspicious.
  • Continuity of dharma: Marriage (vivah) is a sacred sanskar through which two families unite and the couple begins a shared life of duty, devotion and raising a righteous family.
  • Emotional depth: It is a tender moment of a parent's love, letting go with blessings and prayers for their child's happiness, which touches every heart present.

Understood in its true spirit, Kanyadaan is a moment of love, blessing and sacred beginning, not of loss.

The Ritual & Its Spirit

The Kanyadaan is performed with tender, sacred customs during the wedding:

  • Joining of hands: The father (with the mother) places the bride's hand in the groom's, sometimes with a betel leaf, flowers and holy water poured over the joined hands, symbolising the giving.
  • Sankalp and mantras: The father takes a sankalp (sacred resolve) and Vedic mantras are chanted, invoking the blessings of the gods for the couple.
  • The groom's promise: The groom traditionally assures that he will remain a partner to the bride in dharma (righteousness), artha (prosperity) and kama (fulfilment), honouring her always.
  • Blessings: Elders bless the couple for a long, happy and dharmic married life.
  • A note on evolving understanding: Today many families beautifully understand Kanyadaan as a loving entrusting and blessing between equals, and in some traditions both sets of parents participate. The heart of the ritual is love, respect, blessing and a sacred beginning.

Observed with devotion and the right spirit, Kanyadaan remains one of the most sacred and cherished moments of a Hindu marriage. These are traditional beliefs and customs, honoured with love.
