What Is Kundalini Shakti?

Kundalini Shakti is described in yoga and tantra as a subtle spiritual energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine, in the Muladhara (root) chakra.

The word kundalini comes from kundala, meaning "coiled", and this energy is traditionally pictured as a serpent coiled three and a half times, sleeping quietly until it is awakened. It is regarded as a form of the Divine Mother, Shakti, present within every person as pure creative potential.

In this view, most of us live using only a small part of our inner energy. When kundalini begins to stir and rise, it is believed to unfold higher awareness and a deep sense of union with the Divine. It is a sacred subject, approached in tradition with reverence, patience and the guidance of a realised teacher.

Awakening Through the Chakras and Sushumna

When kundalini awakens, it is said to rise from the Muladhara upward through the Sushumna, the central channel of the subtle body, piercing the chakras one by one.

  • Muladhara (root) - the seat where kundalini rests.
  • Svadhishthana (sacral), Manipura (navel), Anahata (heart), Vishuddha (throat) and Ajna (brow) - centres it awakens as it ascends.
  • Sahasrara (crown) - where the rising Shakti is believed to unite with Shiva, pure consciousness.

This union of Shakti and Shiva at the crown is described as a state of profound bliss and Self-realisation. The rising is traditionally supported by steady practice of asana, pranayama, bandha, mantra and meditation, and above all by a purified, devotional heart. It is understood to unfold gradually, never to be forced.

Significance and a Gentle Caution

In the yogic tradition, kundalini represents the potential every soul carries to move from ordinary awareness toward the experience of the Divine within. Its awakening is held as a sign of spiritual maturing rather than a goal to chase for its own sake.

Because it works with the body's subtle energies, kundalini practice is traditionally undertaken with care. Teachers advise a foundation of ethical living, devotion and steadiness first, and warn against forcing the process through intense techniques on one's own.

Please learn such practices from a qualified, experienced teacher, go slowly, and honour your own limits. This article shares traditional understanding for devotional interest and is not medical advice. If you have any physical or mental health condition, consult a qualified doctor before taking up intensive breathwork or energy practices.
