    What Is Parivartini Ekadashi?

Parivartini Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day (ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada. It is also known as Parsva Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi or Vamana Ekadashi. The name comes from parivartan, meaning a turning or change, because devotees believe this is the day Lord Vishnu changes His posture during His four-month cosmic sleep (yoga-nidra) that begins on Devshayani Ekadashi. He is said to turn from one side to the other. Observing this vrat is considered equal in merit to performing the Vajapeya yajna, and it is one of the most cherished Ekadashis dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Tithi and When It Falls in 2026

Parivartini Ekadashi is observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi, which in the Gregorian calendar usually falls in late August or early September. Because the start and end of the ekadashi tithi shift each year and depend on sunrise at your location, the exact date and the parana (fast-breaking) timing can vary by region. The fast is broken on Dwadashi, the twelfth day, within a specific window after sunrise. We strongly recommend you confirm the exact date and parana muhurat on the Vandnaa Panchang for your city before you begin, so your sankalp and parana are correctly timed.

    Significance and the Vamana Connection

This Ekadashi carries a special bond with the Vamana avatar, the dwarf-Brahmin form of Lord Vishnu. According to the legend told to King Yudhishthira, the merit of fasting on this day is so great that it cleanses lifetimes of accumulated sins. Worshipping the Vamana form of Vishnu on Parivartini Ekadashi is believed to bring humility, prosperity and liberation (moksha). Since the Lord is mid-way through His Chaturmas sleep, devotees see His turning over as a tender reminder that the divine watches over the world even in rest. Devotees offer tulsi, light a ghee lamp, and dedicate the day to remembrance and charity.

    Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The katha recalls the tale of King Bali, the noble but proud demon-king who had conquered the three worlds through his devotion and might. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a small Brahmin boy, and approached Bali's grand sacrifice. He humbly asked for only three paces of land. When Bali agreed, Vamana expanded into the cosmic Trivikrama form, covering the earth and the heavens in two strides. For the third, the truthful Bali offered his own head. Pleased by his honesty, the Lord blessed him with the rule of the netherworld (Patala) and promised to guard his door. Reciting this katha on the fast renews faith in surrender and divine grace.

    Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

Follow this simple vidhi to observe the vrat with devotion: 1. Rise before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes. 2. Take the sankalp (vow) to keep the fast, ideally before Lord Vishnu. 3. Set up an altar with an image or idol of Vishnu or Vamana, and place tulsi leaves before Him. 4. Light a ghee lamp and incense, and offer yellow flowers, sandalwood and naivedya. 5. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, read the vrat katha, and chant Vishnu mantras through the day. 6. Keep a nirjala or fruit-and-milk fast as your health allows, avoiding grains and beans. 7. Stay awake at night (jagran) in bhajan and remembrance. 8. Break the fast (parana) on Dwadashi within the prescribed window after first donating food to a Brahmin or the needy.

    Mantras to Chant

Chanting Vishnu's names purifies the mind and deepens devotion on this day. The simplest and most powerful is the moola mantra: 1. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya - the twelve-syllable salutation to Lord Vishnu. 2. Om Namo Narayanaya - the eight-syllable Narayana mantra. 3. For the Vamana form, gently recite Om Vamanaya Namah. You may also chant the Vishnu Sahasranama or sing bhajans such as Achyutam Keshavam. Repeat your chosen mantra a fixed number of rounds on a tulsi mala, holding the intention of humility and surrender that the Vamana avatar embodies.

    Spiritual Benefits of the Vrat

Observing Parivartini Ekadashi with sincerity is said to grant the merit of great yajnas, dissolve past misdeeds, and draw the grace of Lord Vishnu. Beyond scriptural promises, the fast offers tangible inner benefits: a day of light eating rests the body, while japa and katha calm a restless mind. Practising charity and remembrance cultivates the very humility the Vamana story teaches. Families that observe it together often report a deeper sense of gratitude and devotional rhythm in the home. Treat the vrat not as a transaction for rewards but as a loving offering of time and attention to the Lord.
