Shani's influence is felt most during Sade Sati (the seven-and-a-half year transit over the moon sign) and Dhaiya (the two-and-a-half year transit). These periods are not punishments but times of testing and growth. Saturday is Shani's day, and Shani Jayanti and Shani Amavasya are his most powerful days for worship. Regular recitation of the Shani Chalisa during these times is believed to soften difficulties and steady the mind.

The Shani Chalisa praises Shani Dev's dark majestic form, his vehicle the crow, his iron mace and his role as the fair judge of karma. It begins with a doha invoking his grace:

Jai Ganesh Girija suvan, mangal mool sujaan. Kahat Ayodhyadas tum, dehu abhay vardaan.

Chaupai (sample): Jai jai Shri Shanidev prabhu, sun lo vinay hamaar. Tum samarath sab vidhi prabhu, haro bhakt ki bhaar.

The forty verses describe his power over all beings and his mercy toward sincere devotees.

Light a til (sesame) oil lamp and sing this aarti, ideally on Saturday evening:

Jai jai Shri Shanidev, bhakt hitkaari. Soorajke putra prabhu, chhaaya-maharaani. Krishna varan vakra-drishti, char-bhuja dhaari. Neel-kamal dal madhyam, haath mein gada bhaari.

Circle the lamp clockwise, then pray for justice, patience and protection from hardship.

Vidhi: 1. On Saturday, bathe and wear dark blue or black clean clothes. 2. Face west; light a sesame oil lamp before Shani Dev. 3. Offer blue or black flowers, black sesame, and mustard oil. 4. Chant the mantra 108 times on an iron or black-bead mala. 5. Read the chalisa, then perform the aarti. 6. Donate black sesame, urad dal, iron or oil to the needy. Never look directly into Shani's idol's eyes; bow with humility instead.

Sincere worship of Shani Dev is believed to reduce the hardships of Sade Sati and Dhaiya, remove obstacles to career and finances, grant patience and discipline, and protect from accidents, debts and legal trouble. Above all, Shani rewards honesty and hard work, so his grace brings success that is slow but deeply rooted and lasting.

On Saturdays, avoid harming the poor, the elderly, labourers, crows, dogs and the disabled, as Shani protects them. Speak the truth, avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food on his day, and never disrespect anyone less fortunate. Lighting a lamp under a Peepal or Shami tree and serving the needy are considered the most powerful remedies, often more than rituals alone.
