What Is Abhishek & Why It Pleases Shiva

Abhishek means the ceremonial bathing of the deity - here, pouring sacred liquids over the Shivling while chanting mantras. When done with water alone it is called jalabhishek; with several offerings (milk, curd, honey and more) it is part of rudrabhishek.

Lord Shiva is known as Bholenath - the innocent, easily pleased Lord. Tradition holds that he is satisfied with the simplest offering of water and bel patra given with love, asking for no grandeur. This is why abhishek, especially jalabhishek in the month of Sawan (Shravan), is the most cherished form of his worship, kept by millions who carry Ganga water to offer at his shrine.

What to Offer in Abhishek (Step by Step)

In a full abhishek the offerings are poured over the Shivling one by one, with a little clean water in between, while chanting Om Namah Shivaya or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra:

1. Jal (water): Pure water, ideally Ganga jal - the first and most essential offering. 2. Dudh (milk): Raw, unboiled milk, poured in a thin stream. 3. Dahi (curd): For coolness and nourishment. 4. Ghee: A little clarified butter. 5. Shahad (honey): For sweetness in devotion. 6. Shakkar / sharkara (sugar): Sweetness offered to the Lord. (These five - milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar - together form panchamrit.) 7. Sugandhit jal: Water with a little sandalwood or rose, or gangajal again, as a final rinse.

After the abhishek, gently wipe the Shivling and offer chandan, bel patra, dhatura, white flowers, akshat, dhup, deep and bhog.

The Jalabhishek Vidhi

1. Prepare: Bathe, wear clean clothes and gather water (gangajal if available), the abhishek items, bel patra and a lota. 2. Sankalp: Sit facing north or east, fold your hands and take a simple sankalp to perform the abhishek with devotion. 3. Begin with water: Pour clean water over the Shivling in a steady stream while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Pour gently, never forcefully. 4. Offer in order: Add the other offerings - milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar (panchamrit) - with a little water rinse between each, continuing the mantra. 5. Final rinse: Finish with clean water or gangajal so only pure water remains. 6. Adorn: Apply chandan in three lines, place bel patra (smooth side down, in threes), white flowers and dhatura, and offer akshat. 7. Dhup, deep, bhog: Offer incense, the lamp and a simple bhog. 8. Mantra & aarti: Chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and do Shiv aarti. 9. Pradakshina: Do a half-circumambulation (Shiv parikrama is traditionally done halfway, up to the jaladhari, and back). 10. Pranam: Bow and ask Bholenath's forgiveness for any error.

Things to Remember (and Avoid)

Things to Remember (and Avoid)

A few traditional points many devotees keep in mind:

  • Bel patra is dear to Shiva. Offer fresh leaves with three (or more) lobes; tradition says they should not be torn or have holes. The smooth side is placed facing the Shivling.
  • Avoid certain items: Tradition holds that tulsi, ketaki (kewra) flowers, haldi (turmeric) and kumkum are generally not offered to Shiva (turmeric and kumkum being more for the Devi).
  • Pour gently and use a thin, steady stream rather than splashing.
  • Do the parikrama halfway only, respecting the flow from the jaladhari, then return.
  • Cleanliness: Use fresh, unspoiled items and clean water.
  • Sawan is most auspicious: Jalabhishek through the Mondays (Sawan Somwar) and the whole month of Shravan is considered especially dear to Shiva.

Above all, remember that Shiva is Bholenath - even a single lota of water with a true heart pleases him.

Quick Answers

What is the difference between jalabhishek and rudrabhishek?+

Jalabhishek is bathing the Shivling with water alone, the simplest offering. Rudrabhishek is a more elaborate abhishek with several offerings such as panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), accompanied by the chanting of Rudra mantras.

What should not be offered to Shiva?+

By tradition, tulsi, ketaki (kewra) flowers, haldi (turmeric) and kumkum are generally not offered to Lord Shiva. Turmeric and kumkum are mainly offered to the Devi. Bel patra, white flowers, dhatura and bhang are especially dear to Shiva.

Why is jalabhishek special in Sawan?+

The month of Sawan (Shravan) is held to be Lord Shiva's most beloved month. Devotees offer jalabhishek through the Sawan Mondays and the whole month, many carrying Ganga water (kanwar) to his shrine, believing his grace flows most freely in this period.

How should bel patra be offered?+

Offer fresh bel patra with three lobes, ideally unbroken and without holes, after washing them in clean water. The smooth side is placed facing the Shivling. Offering bel patra with 'Om Namah Shivaya' is believed to be especially pleasing to Shiva.
