2026 Shravan Somvar Dates + Why Mondays in Shravan Matter

Shravan Month 2026 (according to Purnimanta calendar):

    • Shravan begins: July 10, 2026 (Friday).
    • Shravan ends: August 8, 2026 (Saturday).

    Shravan Somvar dates 2026:

    • 1st Somvar: July 20, 2026 (Monday).
    • 2nd Somvar: July 27, 2026 (Monday).
    • 3rd Somvar: August 3, 2026 (Monday).
    • 4th Somvar: August 10, 2026 (Monday) - note: technically the last Monday is within Shravan in some panchangs; verify regional.

    Important Shravan dates in 2026:

    • Hariyali Teej: July 17 (Friday).
    • Naga Panchami: August 3 (coincides with 3rd Somvar - extra powerful).
    • Raksha Bandhan: August 8 (Saturday, end of Shravan).

Why Mondays in Shravan are most powerful:

    1. Monday = Shiva's day. Every Monday belongs to Shiva because Monday is ruled by Chandra (Moon), and Shiva wears the moon on his head (Chandrashekhar).

    2. Shravan = Shiva's month. The entire month belongs to Shiva. Reasons:

    • During Samudra Manthan (cosmic ocean churning), Halahala poison emerged. Shiva drank it to save the world. The gods poured Ganga water on his throat to cool the poison's burn. This happened in Shravan month.
    • Goddess Parvati did her tapasya (penance) in Shravan to win Shiva as husband.
    • The Kanwar Yatra (devotees carrying Ganga water to Shiva temples) happens in Shravan.
    • Tradition: Lord Shiva himself stays alert and accessible to devotees during Shravan.

    3. Shravan Somvar = Monday in Shiva month = double-Shiva grace. Each Shravan Somvar is believed to give 7x the benefit of regular Mondays.

    4. Special Shiva forms. Different traditions worship specific Shiva forms each Shravan Somvar:

    • 1st Somvar: Shiva as Mahadeva.
    • 2nd Somvar: Shiva as Maheshwar.
    • 3rd Somvar: Shiva as Shankar.
    • 4th Somvar: Shiva as Rudra.

Who should observe Shravan Somvar Vrat:

    • Unmarried women seeking ideal husband. Parvati got Shiva through Shravan tapasya - same principle applies.
    • Married women for husband's long life, health, and prosperity.
    • Unmarried men seeking spiritual evolution and ideal life partner.
    • People with Mangal dosh in birth chart.
    • People with chronic health issues, especially poison-related (snake bites, allergies, chemical sensitivity - because Shiva is the master of poison).
    • Anyone in conflict, fear, or facing enemies.
    • Spiritual seekers wanting deeper Shiva connection.
    • Workers in dangerous occupations (defense, mining, electrical) - Shiva is the protector of those who handle danger.

Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Mondays consecutive):

The most powerful version is observing 16 consecutive Mondays (not just Shravan). Starting from a Shravan Somvar, continue for 16 weeks (about 4 months). This is the famous 'Solah Somvar Vrat' - believed to bring fulfillment of major life desires (marriage, child, career, health).

Many unmarried women in India start Solah Somvar Vrat in July-August Shravan, completing by November-December. By the next year, they often find ideal partners.

    The Famous Katha (Story):

Long ago, a wealthy merchant lived with his wife in a city. They were childless and worshipped Shiva for a son. After years of Shravan Somvar Vrat, Shiva appeared and granted them a son - but with a condition: 'The boy will live only 16 years.'

The couple were grateful but worried. They sent the boy to study with sages and arranged his marriage to a beautiful princess before he turned 16. The princess was extremely devoted - she did Shravan Somvar Vrat daily even after marriage.

When the boy turned 16, Yamadoots (death messengers) came to take him. The princess was performing her Shravan Somvar puja at that moment. She wrapped her arms around her husband and prayed intensely to Shiva.

Shiva appeared and confronted Yama: 'You cannot take this boy - his wife's devotion is unmatched.' Yama protested that fate cannot be changed. Shiva said: 'My devotee's prayers reshape fate. Take only what is due in karmic balance - extend his life by 32 years.'

The boy was saved. The couple lived long, prosperous lives. The story became the foundation of Shravan Somvar Vrat - showing that sincere fasting and prayer to Shiva can even overcome death itself.

    Powerful Mantras for Shravan Somvar:

    1. Mool mantra: Om Namah Shivaya (108 times minimum).

    2. Panchakshari mantra: Om Namah Shivaya (chant 1008 times during day if possible).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can men observe Shravan Somvar Vrat or is it only for women?+

Absolutely - men should also observe. The vrat is open to all genders. While it has gained association with unmarried women seeking husbands (due to the Parvati story), men benefit equally from Shiva's grace. Men observe Shravan Somvar for: career advancement, removing past life karma, strength, courage, spiritual awakening, ending bad habits (alcohol, smoking - Shiva is master of detachment), and seeking ideal life partner. Many monks, sadhus, and householders do strict Shravan Somvar vrats. The vrat strengthens spiritual willpower for anyone, regardless of gender.

What's the connection between Shravan Somvar and Kanwar Yatra?+

Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage where devotees (called Kanwariyas) walk barefoot to bring Ganga water from Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Sultanganj back to their local Shiva temple in Shravan month. The yatra symbolizes the gods bringing Ganga water to cool Shiva after he drank Halahala poison. Most yatras reach their destination on a Shravan Somvar - especially the 3rd or 4th Monday - to offer the water as Shiva abhishek. In 2026, expect heavy Kanwariya traffic on northern India roads between July 10-August 10. The yatra and Shravan Somvar vrat are spiritually connected - both honor Shiva's sacrifice during Samudra Manthan.

If I miss a Shravan Somvar, can I still complete the Solah Somvar vrat?+

Traditionally, Solah Somvar Vrat requires 16 CONSECUTIVE Mondays without break. If you miss one, you restart from week 1. However, modern adaptations: (1) If illness/emergency causes a miss, you can continue and add one extra Monday at the end. (2) For working professionals who occasionally have travel, maintain at least mental observance and minimum mantra recitation on the 'missed' day. (3) The Udyapan (concluding ceremony) is done after the 17th Monday - making 16 + 1 = 17 weeks total. Be honest with yourself: if you sincerely couldn't observe, modify; if you simply skipped, restart. The vrat trains consistency and devotion.

What kind of bilva patra (bel leaves) should I offer - any rules?+

Specific rules for bilva offering: (1) Must be 3-leafed (trifoliate) - the most sacred form. Single or 5-leafed bilva is acceptable but 3-leaf is ideal. (2) Should be fresh, green, undamaged. Don't offer torn, dried, or insect-eaten leaves. (3) Wash with clean water before offering. (4) Apply sandalwood paste (chandan) on the front of each leaf before placing. (5) Offer with stem-end facing the Linga (some traditions). (6) Number: 11, 21, 108, or 1008 leaves for special vrats. (7) Don't pluck bilva leaves on Mondays themselves - traditionally collected on Sundays. (8) Old bilva leaves from previous day's puja can be used if fresh ones unavailable - bilva does not become 'impure' on Shiva.
