What Is Vamana Jayanti?
Vamana Jayanti marks the appearance day of Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu and the first to take a fully human (though dwarf) form. He appeared as a small Brahmin boy to restore balance when the asura king Bali, though noble and generous, had grown too powerful and proud.
It is celebrated on the Dwadashi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, during the bright fortnight when devotion to Vishnu is at its peak. In South India it falls close to Onam, which celebrates King Bali's annual return.

The Katha of Vamana & King Bali
King Bali, grandson of Prahlad, had conquered the three worlds. Though a just and generous ruler, his growing power threatened the balance of the cosmos. To restore order, Lord Vishnu took birth as Vamana, a small Brahmin boy.
During Bali's great yajna, Vamana asked for a simple gift - as much land as he could cover in three steps. Bali, proud of his generosity, agreed despite his guru Shukracharya's warning.
Vamana then grew to a cosmic form (Trivikrama). With his first step he covered the earth, with the second the heavens, and then asked where to place the third. Bali, humbled and devoted, offered his own head. Pleased by his surrender, Vishnu blessed him with rulership of the netherworld (Patala) and granted him an annual return to his people - the day celebrated as Onam. The katha teaches that true greatness lies in humility and surrender, not in power.

Offer tulsi, yellow flowers, fruit, panchamrit and a ghee lamp. 3. Mantra: Chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' or 'Om Vamanaya Namah', and read the Vamana katha. 4. Fast: Keep a phalahar fast (fruit and milk), avoiding grains; some keep it nirjala. 5. Daan: Donating curd, rice, an umbrella or food to a Brahmin or the needy is especially praised on this day, echoing Bali's spirit of giving. 6. Conclude with aarti and distribute prasad.
