What Is Varalakshmi Vratam
Varalakshmi Vratam is a sacred vrat dedicated to Varalakshmi, the form of Goddess Lakshmi who grants vara (boons). It is observed mainly by married women of South India - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka - and is one of the most cherished women's vrats. Worshipping Varalakshmi is believed to be equal to worshipping all eight forms of Ashtalakshmi together, bringing wealth, health, progeny and family wellbeing.
Tithi and When It Is Observed
Varalakshmi Vratam is observed on the Friday before the Purnima in the month of Shravana (around July to August), the second Friday of Shravana in most traditions. Friday is Goddess Lakshmi's special day, and Shravana is an auspicious month for devotion. The vrat is performed in the morning, though some keep it at twilight as per family custom. Always confirm the exact date and muhurat with a regional Panchang each year.
Significance and the Katha
According to legend, Lord Shiva told Parvati about this vrat so that women could attain prosperity and marital happiness. The katha tells of Charumati, a devout woman to whom Goddess Lakshmi appeared in a dream and asked her to perform the vratam. When Charumati worshipped with devotion, her home overflowed with wealth and her neighbours, seeing her grace, took up the vrat too. The story teaches that sincere devotion and contentment invite lasting prosperity, not mere ritual.
The Kalash and Sacred Thread
The central object of worship is the kalash (sacred pot), set up as the seat of Varalakshmi. A bronze or silver pot is filled with rice or water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and often decorated with a face of the goddess, turmeric, kumkum and flowers - representing Lakshmi herself. A key ritual is tying a yellow sacred thread (toranam or raksha) with nine knots, smeared with turmeric, on the right wrist. This thread symbolises the goddess's protection and blessing for the year ahead.
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
1. Wake early, bathe and wear clean traditional clothes, ideally red or yellow. 2. Clean the puja space and draw a rangoli (kolam); place a wooden seat facing east. 3. Set up the decorated kalash as Varalakshmi and keep the sacred thread ready. 4. Begin with Ganesha puja, then a sankalp stating your intention. 5. Invoke the goddess and offer turmeric, kumkum, flowers, fruits and bhog such as kheer, sundal or sweets. 6. Tie the sacred thread on the wrist, recite the Lakshmi Ashtottara or Sri Suktam, and perform the aarti. 7. Conclude by distributing tamboolam (betel, fruit, kumkum) to married women and sharing prasad.
Fasting Rules
The Varalakshmi fast is gentle rather than severe. Many women keep a partial fast, taking only fruits, milk or a single satvik meal after the puja, while some fast fully until the worship is complete. The day should be kept clean, calm and free of anger or harsh speech. Avoid onion, garlic, alcohol and non-vegetarian food. The vrat is broken with the prasad offered to the goddess, often shared first with other married women.
Mantra to Recite
The simplest mantra to chant during the vrat is:
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
Devotees also recite the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names) and the Sri Suktam for greater blessings. Chant the seed mantra 108 times on a lotus-bead or crystal mala while facing the kalash, holding the intention of prosperity and protection for the whole family.
