चौथा जन्म, मांगा गया

The story appears in the Mahabharata's Shanti Parva, told as one of the many teaching parables offered to Yudhishthira after the war, and it concerns Bharadwaja, one of the Saptarishi and the sage after whom an entire major gotra and an entire ancient system of grammar and phonetics is named.

Bharadwaja is said to have devoted three consecutive lifetimes entirely to the study of the Vedas, denying himself every ordinary pursuit, treating each life purely as continued study of the one subject, and at the end of the third lifetime he still felt he had not reached the end of it.

He resolved to ask for a fourth lifetime, purely for the purpose of finishing what he had started, and approached Indra directly with the request.

Indra did not simply grant or refuse. He took Bharadwaja to a location with three enormous mountains standing before them and, without further explanation, picked up a small handful of earth from the ground and asked Bharadwaja to compare its size to the mountains in front of him.

तीन पर्वतों के सामने एक मुट्ठी

The three mountains, Indra explained, represented the full extent of Vedic knowledge, and the handful of earth in his palm represented everything Bharadwaja had managed to learn across his three complete lifetimes of dedicated, undistracted study.

The comparison was not meant cruelly. Indra's point, as the Mahabharata frames it, was not that Bharadwaja had failed but that the scale of the undertaking he had set himself was simply beyond what any finite number of lifetimes, however devoted, could exhaust.

The Vedas, in this telling, are not a syllabus with an end point reachable by sufficient diligence. They are closer to an ocean: a lifetime of drinking from it leaves the ocean exactly as full as before, and the appropriate response to that fact is not despair but a change in what one is actually trying to do.

Indra's advice, once the comparison had landed, was that Bharadwaja should stop pursuing the whole of Vedic knowledge as an accumulation project and instead pursue the essential teaching within it that actually leads toward liberation, since that essential core, unlike the full body of the texts, is genuinely reachable within a human life.

उस शिक्षा के पीछे की शिक्षा

The Shanti Parva offers this story to Yudhishthira, freshly crowned and facing his own overwhelming set of obligations after the war, as a specific corrective against a specific kind of ambition: the belief that dharma is mastered by exhaustively covering everything rather than by correctly grasping what actually matters.

Bharadwaja's gotra remains one of the most widely carried in India today, and the sage's name is invoked in countless sankalpa formulas by families who trace their line to him, largely without the story of the three mountains attached, which is common for gotra-founders generally: the lineage survives the story.

The parable also sits comfortably alongside this series' other rishi stories about scale and limitation, Vasishtha's grief after losing a hundred sons, Vishwamitra's decades of tapas, Agastya drinking an ocean: a recurring theme across Puranic and epic literature that even the greatest human effort meets a hard boundary somewhere, and that wisdom often consists of correctly locating that boundary rather than refusing to accept it exists.**

Bharadwaja is not recorded as having asked for a fifth lifetime.
