    Who Are the Ashta Lakshmi

Ashta Lakshmi means the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi, the divine mother of wealth, abundance and auspiciousness. True prosperity is not money alone, so each form blesses a distinct kind of richness - material wealth, food, courage, knowledge, progeny, success and victory. Together they represent complete, balanced abundance, which is why devotees invoke all eight rather than wealth alone.

Adi, Dhana, Dhanya and Gaja Lakshmi

Adi Lakshmi is the primordial form, the eternal consort of Vishnu who grants liberation and inner peace. Dhana Lakshmi bestows wealth, gold and financial stability. Dhanya Lakshmi is the giver of grain, food and agricultural plenty, ensuring no home goes hungry. Gaja Lakshmi, flanked by elephants, grants power, royal prosperity, cattle and the abundance that comes with status and good fortune.

Santana, Veera, Vijaya and Vidya Lakshmi

Santana Lakshmi blesses devotees with children, family happiness and the continuity of lineage. Veera Lakshmi (also called Dhairya Lakshmi) grants courage, strength and steadiness to overcome difficulties. Vijaya Lakshmi bestows victory and success in every endeavour and legal or worldly struggle. Vidya Lakshmi is the giver of knowledge, learning, arts and wisdom - the wealth that can never be stolen.

    Ashta Lakshmi Mantra

The core seed mantra of Lakshmi, used for all eight forms, is:

    Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah

For each form, devotees add her name, for example Om Dhana Lakshmyai Namah or Om Vidya Lakshmyai Namah. The famous Ashta Lakshmi Stotram by Adi Shankara praises all eight forms in sequence and is recited especially on Fridays and during Diwali.

    How to Worship Ashta Lakshmi

    1. On Friday morning or evening, bathe and wear clean clothes; face east or north. 2. Place an Ashta Lakshmi image in the home mandir and light a ghee lamp. 3. Offer red or lotus flowers, kumkum, rice and white or yellow sweets. 4. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah 108 times on a kamal gatta (lotus seed) mala. 5. Recite the Ashta Lakshmi Stotram and the Lakshmi Aarti. 6. Keep the space clean and clutter-free, as Lakshmi dwells only where there is purity and order.

    Benefits of Ashta Lakshmi Worship

Worshipping all eight forms is believed to bring complete prosperity - steady wealth and savings, plentiful food, a happy family, courage in hardship, success in work and studies, and freedom from debt. Because the blessing is balanced, devotees gain not just money but the wisdom and strength to keep and grow it, which is why Ashta Lakshmi worship is so loved during Diwali and Lakshmi puja.

Where to Keep the Ashta Lakshmi Image

Place the Ashta Lakshmi photo or idol in the north-east or east of the home mandir, facing east or west. A north or north-east drawing room wall is also auspicious. Keep it above eye level, never in a bedroom facing the bed, bathroom or store room. Light a lamp before it on Fridays and keep fresh flowers, as Lakshmi favours a clean, fragrant and well-lit space.
