What Is the Sri Yantra
The Sri Yantra (also Shree Yantra or Sri Chakra) is a sacred geometric diagram made of nine interlocking triangles radiating from a central point (bindu). It is the visual form of Goddess Tripura Sundari and Mahalakshmi, representing the union of the divine feminine and masculine and the entire cosmos. Considered the king of all yantras, it is worshipped as a powerful tool to attract abundance, harmony and spiritual energy.
Significance and Meaning of the Geometry
Each layer of the Sri Yantra has meaning. The central bindu is the source of all creation, the four upward triangles represent Shiva and the five downward triangles represent Shakti. Around them sit lotus petals, symbolising the unfolding of life, enclosed in a square gateway (bhupura) with four doors to the cosmos. Meditating on this geometry is said to draw the mind from the outer world to the inner divine centre.
Sri Yantra Mantra
The yantra is energised with Lakshmi's powerful seed mantra:
Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
A shorter daily mantra is Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Mahalakshmyai Namah. Chant it 108 times facing the yantra to keep it charged and active.
Where to Place the Sri Yantra
Place the Sri Yantra in the north-east (Ishanya) corner of the home mandir or in the north, the direction of Kubera and wealth. It should face east or north, be kept above floor level on a clean red or yellow cloth, and never be placed in a bathroom, bedroom near the bed or on the ground. In a shop or office, a Sri Yantra near the cash box or facing the owner's seat is considered very auspicious for business growth.
Sri Yantra Puja Vidhi
1. On a Friday or Diwali, bathe and clean the yantra with raw milk and Ganga jal, then wipe it dry. 2. Place it on a red cloth in the mandir, facing east. 3. Light a ghee lamp and incense, and offer kumkum, akshat, red flowers and sweets. 4. Chant the Lakshmi mantra 108 times on a kamal gatta or sphatik mala. 5. Offer water and pray for prosperity and harmony. 6. Worship it daily with a lamp and fresh flowers to keep its energy alive.
Benefits of the Sri Yantra
The Sri Yantra is believed to attract steady wealth, remove financial blockages and clear debts, bring success and growth in business and career, and fill the home with positive, harmonious energy. It is also valued for deepening meditation and concentration, reducing stress and removing Vastu dosh, making it both a wealth tool and a spiritual aid.
Choosing and Caring for a Sri Yantra
Prefer a yantra with accurate, symmetrical geometry in copper, brass, silver or sphatik (crystal); a flawed or asymmetric yantra is best avoided. Get it energised (prana pratishtha) with mantras before regular worship. Keep it clean and dust-free, never let it tarnish badly, and avoid placing other clutter on the same altar. A respectfully kept and regularly worshipped yantra is believed to stay powerfully active.
