What Is a Kamal Gatta Mala
A Kamal Gatta Mala is a rosary of 108 beads made from dried lotus seeds (kamal gatta). The lotus is the seat and the favourite flower of Goddess Lakshmi, who is depicted seated on it, so its seeds are considered deeply sacred to her. This mala is the traditional and most recommended rosary for chanting Lakshmi mantras and performing wealth-related sadhana.
Significance for Lakshmi Sadhana
Just as a Rudraksha mala suits Shiva mantras and a Tulsi mala suits Vishnu, the Kamal Gatta mala is the ideal medium for Lakshmi. Chanting her mantra on lotus seeds is believed to multiply the power of the sadhana, because the mala itself carries the energy of the goddess. It is especially used for Diwali, Lakshmi puja and Sharad Purnima sadhana, and by those seeking to clear debt and grow prosperity.
Mantra for Kamal Gatta Mala
The main mantra chanted on this mala is Lakshmi's powerful seed mantra:
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
A longer, very effective option is Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Mahalakshmyai Namah. Chant one full round (108 beads) or more daily, ideally as part of a fixed practice over a set number of days.
Jap Vidhi - How to Use the Mala
1. Bathe and wear clean clothes; sit facing east or north before Lakshmi in the home mandir. 2. Light a ghee lamp and offer red or lotus flowers. 3. Hold the mala in your right hand, rolling each bead with the thumb and middle finger, never using the index finger. 4. Begin from the bead next to the sumeru (head bead) and chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah on each bead. 5. On reaching the sumeru, do not cross it; turn the mala and continue for the next round. 6. Practise at the same time and place daily, ideally for 11, 21 or 40 days for a sankalp.
Benefits of the Kamal Gatta Mala
Chanting Lakshmi mantras on a Kamal Gatta mala is believed to attract wealth and prosperity, remove poverty and debt, and open blocked sources of income. It is also said to bring mental peace and focus during japa, strengthen devotion to the goddess, and remove negativity. Because the mala is sacred to Lakshmi, even keeping it in the puja space or cash box is considered auspicious.
Kamal Gatta vs Other Malas
Different malas suit different deities and goals. Rudraksha is best for Shiva and general spiritual practice, Tulsi for Vishnu and Krishna, Sphatik (crystal) for peace and Lakshmi, and Kamal Gatta specifically for Lakshmi and wealth sadhana. For dedicated prosperity practice, the Kamal Gatta or Sphatik mala is most recommended, with Kamal Gatta being the traditional first choice for Lakshmi mantras.
How to Keep and Care for the Mala
Keep your Kamal Gatta mala personal and do not let others use it for japa. Store it in a clean cloth pouch or in the home mandir, never on the floor or in a bathroom. Keep it dry, as the seeds can spoil with moisture. Before first use, purify it with Ganga jal and energise it by chanting the Lakshmi mantra. Worn with faith, it can also be kept on the body as a sacred reminder of the goddess.
