Who Is Bhagwan Dattatreya
Bhagwan Dattatreya, known as Guru Datta, is the unique combined avatar of the Trimurti - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva) in one form. Born to the great sage Atri and the devoted Anasuya, he is depicted with three heads and six arms, accompanied by four dogs (the four Vedas) and a cow (the Earth and Dharma). He is revered as the Adi Guru, the first teacher of the yoga and avadhuta traditions, who guides seekers beyond ego toward true wisdom and liberation.
Significance and Guru Tradition
Dattatreya is the heart of the Guru tradition (Guru parampara). It is said he learned from 24 gurus drawn from nature itself - the earth, water, wind, the bee, the python and more - teaching that wisdom can be found everywhere by a humble mind. As the union of creation, preservation and dissolution, he removes the seeker's three-fold suffering and grants both worldly relief and spiritual progress. Great saints such as Shripad Shri Vallabh and Narasimha Saraswati are honoured as his later incarnations.
Dattatreya Aarti
Light a ghee lamp before Guru Datta, ideally on a Thursday, and sing:
Jai Dev Jai Dev Jai Shri Guru Datta. Aarti ovaalu, charani thevuni maatha. Trimukh-shadbhuj rupa, Brahma-Vishnu-Maha. Anasuya-nandan, taaro bhav-saritha.
Circle the lamp clockwise, offer flowers at his feet, and bow with the prayer 'Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digambara'.
Dattatreya Mantra and Jaap
The most loved Datta mantras are:
Om Shri Gurudev Dattaya Namah
and the rhythmic chant:
Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digambara
A powerful gayatri form is Om Dattatreyaya Vidmahe, Yogishwaraya Dheemahi, Tanno Datta Prachodayat. Chant 108 times on a rudraksha mala on Thursday morning, seeking a true guru, clarity of mind and freedom from worldly bondage.
Dattatreya Puja Vidhi
Thursday is sacred to Guru Datta. A simple vidhi: 1. Bathe early and wear clean, preferably yellow or white clothes. 2. Place an image or padukas (sacred footwear) of Guru Datta and light a ghee lamp and incense. 3. Offer yellow or white flowers, tulsi, and a bhog of milk, fruit or sweets. 4. Chant 'Om Shri Gurudev Dattaya Namah' 108 times. 5. Read a chapter of the Guru Charitra or the Datta Bavani if you keep one. 6. Perform the aarti and pray for guidance, then share the prasad. Feeding a dog or cow on Thursday is considered especially pleasing to Datta.
Benefits of Worshipping Guru Datta
Devotees worship Dattatreya to find a true guru and spiritual direction, to dissolve ego and confusion, and to receive protection from negative forces and difficult times. As the combined power of the Trimurti, his grace is believed to bring inner peace, steady progress in sadhana, relief from chronic troubles, and the strength to walk the path of dharma with a calm, surrendered heart.
Datta Jayanti and Sacred Places
Datta Jayanti, the birth of Bhagwan Dattatreya, falls on the full-moon day (purnima) of Margashirsha month, when devotees fast, recite the Guru Charitra and hold all-night bhajans. Major shrines include Ganagapur and Narsobawadi in Maharashtra and Girnar in Gujarat, where his padukas are deeply revered. Datta worship is especially loved in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.
