Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami - The Climax of Navratri
Durga Ashtami (also called Maha Ashtami) and Maha Navami are the eighth and ninth days of Sharad Navratri and its most sacred high point. On these days Maa Durga is worshipped in her fiercest, most victorious forms - Maha Gauri on Ashtami and Siddhidatri on Navami. These are the days the Goddess is believed to be most present and most generous, granting protection, strength and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.
Tithi and When They Fall in 2026
Durga Ashtami falls on the Ashtami (eighth day) and Maha Navami on the Navami (ninth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin, during Sharad Navratri. In the Gregorian calendar these usually fall in late September or October, just before Vijayadashami. The Sandhi Puja, performed at the junction of Ashtami and Navami, has very specific timings. Always confirm the exact Ashtami, Navami and Sandhi Muhurat for your city on the Vandnaa Panchang.
Significance of Ashtami and Navami
On Maha Ashtami, Maa Durga is believed to have unleashed her fiercest power to destroy the demon armies of Mahishasura. The Sandhi Puja - the 48-minute window spanning the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and first 24 minutes of Navami - marks the precise moment the Goddess took the form of Chamunda to slay the demons Chanda and Munda. On Maha Navami, the battle reaches its climax, completing the worship of all nine forms of Navadurga before Vijayadashami.
Ashtami and Navami Puja Vidhi

Worship Maa Durga on both days as follows: 1. Bathe early, wear clean clothes and clean the puja altar. 2. Light a ghee lamp and the akhand jyot if you keep one through Navratri. 3. Offer red flowers, red chunari, sindoor, akshat, incense and a coconut to the Goddess. 4. Offer bhog such as halwa, puri, kheer or chana. 5. Recite the Durga Chalisa, Durga Saptashati or Mahishasura Mardini Stotram. 6. On Ashtami, perform Sandhi Puja with sixteen lamps if possible; on Navami, perform the havan and Kanya Pujan to complete the vrat.
Kanya Pujan and Havan
Kanya Pujan (also called Kanjak) is the heart of Ashtami and Navami worship, where young girls are honoured as living forms of the Goddess. 1. Invite an odd number of girls, traditionally nine, along with one young boy (Batuk Bhairav). 2. Wash their feet, apply tilak and tie a sacred thread (mauli) on their wrists. 3. Serve them puri, halwa and chana as prasad. 4. Offer a small gift or dakshina and seek their blessings. The havan is performed by offering ahutis into the sacred fire with Durga mantras, completing the Navratri sankalp.
Mantras for Ashtami and Navami
Chant these powerful mantras on these days:
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche
Maha Gauri (Ashtami): Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah
Siddhidatri (Navami): Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah
The universal Durga prayer Sarva Mangala Mangalye, Shive Sarvartha Sadhike, Sharanye Tryambake Gauri, Narayani Namostute may be chanted on both days.
Significance and Benefits

Worship on Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami is believed to grant the Goddess's fullest grace - protection from negativity, victory over difficulties, health, prosperity and the fulfilment of heartfelt wishes. Kanya Pujan is considered especially meritorious, as honouring young girls is honouring Shakti herself. Completing the havan on Navami brings the fruit of the entire nine-day Navratri sadhana.
