The Deity - Guruvayurappa
The presiding deity is Lord Krishna worshipped as Guruvayurappa, the 'Lord of Guruvayur'. The idol is a beautiful four-armed form holding the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace) and padma (lotus), representing Vishnu and the child-Krishna together. Devotees see in him both the playful infant of Vrindavan and the supreme Lord of Dwarka, which is why he is adored with overflowing love.
Location - Dwarka of the South
The temple is in Guruvayur town in the Thrissur district of Kerala and is fondly called the 'Dwarka of the South' (Bhuloka Vaikunta). Tradition says the idol was once worshipped at Dwarka and was brought here by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu (the wind god), giving the place its name. It is among the holiest Vaishnava shrines in South India and one of the most frequented temples in Kerala.
History and Katha
According to legend, the idol is extremely ancient, said to have been worshipped by Krishna himself. When Dwarka was submerged, Guru and Vayu carried the idol to this spot and installed it here with the blessings of Lord Shiva, who is enshrined nearby at Mammiyur. The temple is also linked to the saint-poet Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who composed the devotional Narayaniyam here and was cured of his ailments by the Lord's grace.
Strict Dress Code and Temple Rules

Guruvayur follows a traditional dress code, like many Kerala temples. Men must enter bare-chested (often with an angavastram on the shoulder) wearing a mundu or dhoti, while women wear sarees or the salwar set; trousers and modern wear are not permitted inside. Only Hindus are allowed into the inner shrine, and devotees are expected to maintain cleanliness, silence and discipline. Following these rules respectfully is part of the temple's deep traditional sanctity.
Darshan, Timing and Ekadashi
The temple opens very early, around 3 am with the Nirmalyam darshan, and follows a strict schedule of poojas through the day before closing at night. Guruvayur Ekadashi, in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam (November-December), is the most sacred day, drawing enormous crowds for special offerings and night-long devotion. Weddings, annaprashana (first rice-feeding) and thulabharam (offering one's weight in goods) are popular sevas performed here.
Krishna Mantra
Devotees chant the simple, loving names of the Lord:
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
The Hare Krishna maha-mantra and verses from the Narayaniyam are also sung here with great feeling. Repeating Krishna's names with love, especially during the morning darshan, is believed to fill the heart with peace and devotion.
Festivals at Guruvayur

The grandest festival is the ten-day Guruvayur Utsavam in the month of Kumbham, featuring the famed temple elephants and processions. Guruvayur Ekadashi, Janmashtami (Krishna's birth) and Vishu (the Malayalam New Year) are celebrated with deep devotion and special offerings. During these days the temple resounds with bhajans, lamps and the joy of countless pilgrims.
