    The Deity - Dandayudhapani

The presiding deity is Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), the son of Shiva and Parvati, worshipped here as Dandayudhapani - the one who holds the danda (staff). Unlike his royal warrior forms elsewhere, here he stands as a young renunciate (sanyasi), clad in a simple loincloth with a shaven head, having renounced all worldly possessions. This form teaches that true wisdom and divinity lie in inner detachment, not outer riches.

    Location - Arupadai Veedu

The temple sits atop the Palani hills in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, reached by a climb of steps, a winding road or a ropeway and funicular. It is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred battle-camps or abodes of Murugan in Tamil Nadu, and among the most visited of them all. Palani draws millions of pilgrims, many of whom climb the hill carrying offerings as a vow.

    The Jnana Pazham Katha

The temple is famous for the jnana pazham (fruit of wisdom) story. Sage Narada once gave a divine mango to Shiva, to be given to the worthier of his two sons. Shiva set a contest - whoever circled the world first would win it. The elder Ganesha simply circled his parents, declaring them his whole world, and won the fruit. The angered younger Murugan left Kailasa and came to Palani, renouncing everything, and here he became Dandayudhapani - he himself the pazham (fruit) of true wisdom, which gives the hill the name Pazham-nee (you are the fruit), softened to Palani.

    The Panchamrit Abhishekam

    The Panchamrit Abhishekam

The Palani idol is uniquely made of a mix of navapashanam, said to be nine medicinal-herbal substances, by the siddha sage Bhogar. Because of this, the abhishekam (ritual bathing) with panchamrit - milk, curd, honey, sandal paste and other items - is believed to absorb healing properties. The bathed substances, offered as prasad, are revered for their sacred and curative power, making this abhishekam one of the temple's most cherished rituals.

    Darshan and Timing Tips

The temple opens very early, around 5.30 am, with several daily abhishekams and aartis through the day until the night closing. You can climb the hill steps, take the winged-step road, or use the ropeway/funicular for an easier ascent. Many devotees offer their hair (mottai) or carry kavadi as a vow. Choose an early-morning weekday darshan to avoid the heaviest crowds, especially during festival seasons.

    Murugan Mantra

Devotees call upon the Lord with his loving names:

    Om Saravanabhava

The chant Vetri Vel, Veera Vel and the Skanda Shashti Kavacham are also sung before Murugan. Calling out Haro Hara and Murugaa Murugaa with devotion, especially while climbing the hill, is believed to grant courage, wisdom and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.

    Festivals at Palani

    Festivals at Palani

The grandest festival is Thaipusam, in the Tamil month of Thai (January-February), when lakhs of devotees throng Palani carrying kavadi and milk-pots in fulfilment of vows. Panguni Uthiram, Skanda Shashti and Vaikasi Visakam (Murugan's birth star) are also celebrated with great fervour. During these times the hill resounds with the cries of Haro Hara and the rhythm of kavadi dances.
