Who Is Lord Kartikeya (Murugan)
Lord Kartikeya is the elder son of Shiva and Parvati and the younger brother of Ganesha. Across India he is loved under many names - Murugan in Tamil Nadu, Skanda in the Puranas, Subramanya in Karnataka and Kartik in Bengal. He is the commander-in-chief of the army of the gods, riding a peacock and carrying the divine spear called Vel. Devotees turn to him for courage, victory over inner and outer enemies, sharp focus and protection.
Significance and Symbolism
Kartikeya was born to destroy the demon Tarakasura, a task only a son of Shiva could accomplish. His Vel represents discrimination that cuts through ignorance, and his peacock vehicle shows mastery over ego and vanity. Worshipping him is said to grant jnana (wisdom) along with valour, which is why he is also called Tarakajit (conqueror of Taraka) and Senapati (the general). Skanda Sashti, falling in the Tamil month of Aippasi, is his most important festival.
Kartikeya Aarti - Jai Jai Kartikeya
Sing this aarti with a lit ghee lamp, ideally morning or evening, while circling the diya clockwise before the deity:
Jai jai Kartikeya Swami, Shiva-Suvan sukhdaai. Mor vahan par sohat, haath shakti Vel laai. Tarakasur sanhaari, deven raksha keeni. Bhakt jano ki vipda, pal mein haari leeni.
Finish by offering the flame to the family, taking the blessing on your eyes, and praying for courage and clear direction.
Kartikeya Chalisa - Essence and How to Recite
The Kartikeya Chalisa praises Murugan as the six-faced Shanmukha, born of Shiva's fire and nurtured by the six Krittika mothers. Begin with a doha invoking Ganesha and Shiva, then recite the forty verses describing his birth, his Vel, his victory over Taraka and the boons he gives. Reciting it on Tuesdays and during Skanda Sashti is considered especially powerful for removing fear and obstacles to success.
Murugan Beej Mantra and Gayatri
The simplest and most powerful chant is the Saravana Bhava mantra:
Om Saravana Bhavaya Namah
For focused practice, use the Kartikeya Gayatri:
Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe, Mahasenaya Dheemahi, Tanno Shanmukha Prachodayat.
Chant 108 times on a rudraksha mala facing east. The beej mantra is said to steady a restless mind, sharpen study and remove fear before exams, interviews and difficult tasks.
Kartikeya Puja Vidhi at Home
1. Bathe and wear clean clothes; face east. 2. Place an image or idol of Kartikeya and light a ghee lamp and incense. 3. Offer red or yellow flowers, sandalwood paste and kumkum. 4. Offer bhog of fruit, jaggery or sweet pongal. 5. Chant Om Saravana Bhavaya Namah 108 times. 6. Read the chalisa, then perform the aarti. 7. Pray for courage, focus and protection, and distribute prasad. Tuesdays, Sashti tithi and Skanda Sashti are the most auspicious days.
Benefits of Worshipping Kartikeya
Devotees report greater courage and confidence, victory in competition and litigation, freedom from fear and negativity, sharper concentration for students, and protection of children. Because he embodies both strength and wisdom, his worship is favoured by those seeking success in careers, defence services, sports and studies.
