Why Hanuman Aarti Holds Special Power

Of all the aartis sung in Hindu homes, Hanuman Aarti - Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki holds a unique place. Composed by Sant Tulsidas (the same saint who wrote Hanuman Chalisa and Ramcharitmanas), this aarti is an outpouring of pure devotion in just six short verses.

Why every Hanuman temple chants it twice daily:

    • Morning aarti - invokes Hanuman's protection for the day
    • Evening aarti - closes the day with gratitude
    • Tuesday & Saturday evenings - extended version with full ghee diya

The aarti's structure: Six verses of 4 lines each. Each verse celebrates a specific feat of Hanuman ji - strength, devotion, Lanka burning, mountain lifting, child-like grace before Ram, and the ultimate boon of Ram-naam (the chant of Lord Ram's name) for devotees. By the time you finish all six verses, you have walked through Hanuman's entire glory in three minutes.

The single line that contains the whole aarti: 'Aarti kije Hanuman lala ki, dushta-dalan Raghunath kala ki' - 'Let us perform aarti of Hanuman lala (the beloved child), the destroyer of evil, the strength of Raghunath (Ram).'

🪔 The Vandnaa App has the full Hanuman Aarti audio in 5 different singers (traditional, classical, modern bhajan style) with synchronized bilingual lyrics.

Complete Hanuman Aarti Lyrics in Hindi (हनुमान आरती)

    Hindi Devanagari (Sanskrit-Hindi):

Sanskrit Roman transliteration (for non-Devanagari readers):

Aarti kije Hanuman lala ki, Dushta-dalan Raghunath kala ki.

Jaake bal se girivar kaanpe, Rog dosh jaake nikat na jhaanke. Anjani putra maha baldai, Santan ke prabhu sadaa sahaai.

De beera Raghunath pathaaye, Lanka jaari Siya sudhi laaye.

Sur nar muni aarti utaare, Jai jai jai Hanuman uchaare.

    Pronunciation tips for Hindi readers:

    • 'Lala' = lah-lah (beloved child)
    • 'Girivar' = the great mountain (literal: 'best of mountains')
    • 'Pavansut' = son of the wind (Vayu)
    • Always sing slowly the first time, faster on repeat verses
    • Clap on the rhythm: 1-2-3 pause, 1-2-3 pause

Hanuman Aarti - Complete English Translation with Meaning

Verse 1 - The Opening Invocation: 'Aarti kije Hanuman lala ki, dushta-dalan Raghunath kala ki.'

Let us perform aarti of beloved Hanuman, the destroyer of evil and the strength (kala) of Raghunath (Lord Ram).

Verse 2 - Hanuman's Cosmic Strength: 'Jaake bal se girivar kaanpe, rog dosh jaake nikat na jhaanke. Anjani putra maha baldai, santan ke prabhu sadaa sahaai.'

From whose strength even mountains tremble, near whom no disease or fault dares come close. Son of mother Anjani, the great strength-giver, the eternal helper of saints and devotees.

Verse 3 - The Lanka Mission: 'De beera Raghunath pathaaye, Lanka jaari Siya sudhi laaye. Lanka so kot samudra si khaai, jaat Pavansut baar na laai.'

Given the heroic mission by Raghunath (Ram), he burned Lanka and brought news of Sita. Lanka - surrounded by an ocean wide as a moat - yet the son of the wind (Hanuman) crossed it without delay.

Verse 4 - Defeating Demons & Saving Lakshman: 'Lanka jaari asur sanhaare, Siya-Ram ji ke kaaj sanvaare. Lakshman moorchhit pade sakaare, laaye sanjeevan praan ubaare.'

Having burned Lanka and slain the demons, he completed the work of Sita and Ram. When Lakshman fell unconscious in battle, Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani herb and saved his life.

Verse 5 - The Ahiravana Rescue: 'Paithi paatal tori jam kaare, Ahiravan ki bhuja ukhaare. Baayen bhuja asur dal maare, daahine bhuja santjan taare.'

Entering the netherworld and breaking the gates of death, he tore off Ahiravana's arms. With his left arm he destroys demonic forces; with his right arm he uplifts saintly devotees.

Verse 6 - Universal Worship: 'Sur nar muni aarti utaare, jai jai jai Hanuman uchaare. Kanchan thaar kapoor lau chhaai, aarti karat Anjana maai.'

Gods, humans, and sages perform his aarti, chanting 'Victory, Victory, Victory to Hanuman!' On a golden plate the camphor flame sways - Mother Anjana herself performs the aarti.

Closing Couplet - The Promise: 'Jo Hanuman ji ki aarti gaave, basi Baikunth param pad paave.'

Whoever sings Hanuman's aarti reaches Baikunth (Vishnu's eternal abode) and attains the supreme spiritual state.

Why this aarti is so powerful: In just six verses, Tulsidas walks the devotee through Hanuman's entire epic - from his cosmic strength, to his Ram-seva, to the rescue of Lakshman, to defeating the netherworld demon, to becoming the universally worshipped one. Each verse can stand alone as a meditation.

When to Sing Hanuman Aarti - Best Time, Day & Vidhi

When to Sing Hanuman Aarti - Best Time, Day & Vidhi

    Best times of day:

    • Sunrise (5:30–6:30 AM) - Hanuman is most receptive at sunrise; this is his peak energetic window
    • Sunset (6:00–7:30 PM) - closing the day; standard 'sandhya aarti' time at every Hanuman temple
    • 8 PM - for those who couldn't catch sunset; still within the auspicious twilight window

    Best days of the week:

    • Tuesday (Mangalvar) - Hanuman's primary day; mandatory aarti for devotees
    • Saturday (Shanivar) - to ward off Shani-related troubles (Shani sade-sati, dhaiyya)
    • Hanuman Jayanti (April) - extended aarti, full bhajan-kirtan
    • Sundarkand path days - aarti immediately after the path

Step-by-step vidhi for home aarti: 1. Bathe and wear clean clothes (red/saffron preferred for Hanuman) 2. Sit before Hanuman ji's photo or murti facing east or north 3. Offer fresh flowers (red hibiscus is Hanuman's favourite) and garland 4. Apply sindoor or red kumkum tilak to Hanuman ji 5. Light a mustard-oil diya (Hanuman's preferred oil) - single wick for daily, 4-wick or 5-wick on Tuesdays 6. Light camphor (kapoor) on a small thaali 7. Offer boondi laddoo or banana as bhog 8. Stand or sit, hold the aarti thaali in your right hand 9. Move the aarti in a clockwise circular motion in front of Hanuman ji while singing - first the head, then full circle for the whole murti, slowly 10. Sing the full 6 verses without rushing - typical duration 3–4 minutes 11. Close eyes, fold hands, take 1 minute for silent prayer 12. Distribute the bhog as prasad - never take it back

    Key rules:

    • Mustard oil for the diya is the single most important detail. Hanuman is said to love its smell.
    • Aarti must be done STANDING if you are physically able; sitting only if elderly or ill.
    • Never offer Tulsi to Hanuman - Tulsi is for Vishnu/Krishna forms only.
    • Never sing Hanuman aarti during the actual eating of food or during inappropriate states (drunk, after non-veg, during deep mourning).
    • On Mondays, prefer the Shiva aarti - Hanuman is Shiva's devotee, so doing Hanuman aarti on Monday isn't wrong, but it's not as primary as Tuesday.

10 Spiritual & Practical Benefits of Hanuman Aarti

Tradition holds that singing Hanuman aarti regularly produces both inner transformation and outer protection. Here are the 10 most-cited benefits across centuries of devotional literature:

    1. Removal of Fear (Bhaya Nivarana) - Hanuman is the destroyer of every form of fear. Daily aarti gradually dissolves anxiety, panic, and irrational fears.

    2. Protection from Evil Eye & Negative Energy - The 'baayen bhuja asur dal maare' line is considered a direct shield. Homes that sing it daily report fewer negative incidents.

    3. Strength in Adversity - Hanuman is the deity of bal (strength). Devotees facing court cases, business setbacks, or health crises find renewed will-power.

    4. Relief from Shani Dosh / Sade-Sati - Hanuman is the only deity who can pacify Shani Dev. Saturday Hanuman aarti is the classical remedy for Shani-related troubles.

    5. Mental Calm & Clarity - The repetitive rhythm and devotional surrender cool the over-thinking mind. Many find it works better than meditation when anxiety is high.

    6. Resolution of Stuck Situations - Where logic, money, and effort have failed, Hanuman's grace breaks deadlocks. Sing for 21 days continuously when nothing else is moving.

    7. Health Recovery - The verse about Lakshman's revival via Sanjeevani is invoked for health troubles. Not a substitute for medicine - a powerful complement.

    8. Marital & Family Harmony - Hanuman is the deity of pure, ego-less love (his bhakti for Ram is the model). Daily aarti by either spouse softens family tensions.

    9. Removal of Manglik / Marriage Delay - For unmarried adults facing delays, Tuesday Hanuman aarti is one of the most prescribed remedies in classical jyotish.

    10. Path to Moksha - The closing couplet promises Baikunth (Vishnu's eternal abode) - singing this aarti regularly is itself a path of liberation.

The 41-day promise: Tradition says: sing the full Hanuman aarti for 41 consecutive days without missing a single day, and Hanuman's grace will visibly enter your life. Skip even one day and the count restarts. Most devotees find that within the 41 days, at least one impossible-seeming problem gets resolved.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Singing Hanuman Aarti

Even devout households make small errors that reduce the aarti's spiritual potency. Here are the 8 most common mistakes:

    1. Using regular oil instead of mustard oil for the diya. Mustard oil (sarson tel) is non-negotiable for Hanuman. Sesame, ghee, or other oils are for other deities. Mustard oil also has antimicrobial properties - its smoke purifies the room.

    2. Sitting and singing instead of standing. Aarti is meant to be a physical offering - the standing, the swaying with the diya, the rhythmic clapping. Sitting through it reduces it to a recitation, losing 60% of its energy.

    3. Rushing through the verses. Each verse should take 25–30 seconds. Total aarti = 3–4 minutes minimum. Singing it in 90 seconds means the brain hasn't had time to enter the bhakti state.

    4. Singing aarti without first lighting the diya. The diya represents the inner light awakening - without it, the aarti is just words.

    5. Offering tulsi to Hanuman. Tulsi is sacred to Vishnu/Krishna only. Hanuman receives red flowers (hibiscus, rose), not tulsi.

    6. Not closing eyes during the chorus. The 'jai jai jai Hanuman' line is the moment to close eyes and let the sound resonate inside. Singing with open eyes throughout misses this transcendent moment.

    7. Singing right after non-veg or alcohol. Aarti requires sattvic state. Wait at least 4 hours after such food/drink, or ideally not on the same day.

    8. Distributing prasad before completing the aarti. All bhog must be offered with full aarti completion first. Distributing midway breaks the flow of grace.

Bonus mistake - singing without understanding meaning. Even if you don't know Hindi/Sanskrit perfectly, read the English translation once. Devotion without comprehension still works, but devotion WITH comprehension is many times more powerful.

🪔 The Vandnaa App's Hanuman Aarti screen highlights each line as it's sung - perfect for those learning the words while keeping the rhythm.

Make Hanuman Aarti a Daily Anchor

Make Hanuman Aarti a Daily Anchor

If you take only one practice from Hindu devotional life and keep it for the rest of your years, let it be the Hanuman Aarti. Three minutes a day. Six verses. One mustard oil diya. That's it.

Why this practice above almost any other:

    • It fits any schedule (3 minutes)
    • It needs no expensive items (mustard oil + a diya = ₹50)
    • It works whether you're a beginner or advanced devotee
    • It addresses every life problem - fear, money, health, marriage, Shani - through one deity
    • It builds family bond when sung together morning/evening
    • It teaches children devotion through rhythm and repetition

Start protocol - for absolute beginners:

    • Day 1–7: Just listen to the audio twice a day. Don't try to sing. Let the words enter you.
    • Day 8–14: Sing along softly while listening. Don't worry about pronunciation.
    • Day 15–21: Sing without audio, with the lyrics in front of you.
    • Day 22 onwards: Sing from memory. Add the diya, the bhog, the standing posture.

For experienced devotees: Commit to the 41-day uninterrupted protocol. Mark a calendar. Don't break it. Many lives have been transformed in a single 41-day cycle.

The deepest secret: The line 'jo Hanuman ji ki aarti gaave, basi Baikunth param pad paave' is not poetic exaggeration. Tulsidas wrote it from direct experience. The aarti is itself a spiritual ladder - every singing takes you one rung higher. After enough rungs, the ascent becomes irreversible.

    Jai Hanuman. Jai Shri Ram.

    What People Ask Most

Who composed the Hanuman Aarti 'Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki'?+

The Hanuman Aarti was composed by Sant Tulsidas (1532–1623 CE), the same saint who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and Ramcharitmanas. It was written as part of his lifelong devotion to Lord Ram and Hanuman.

Can I sing Hanuman Aarti every day?+

Yes - daily Hanuman aarti is one of the most recommended devotional practices in Hinduism. Morning and evening (twice a day) is ideal. Tuesdays and Saturdays are especially powerful.

Why mustard oil for Hanuman aarti diya?+

Mustard oil (sarson tel) is Hanuman's preferred oil per ancient tradition - its smoke is said to please him directly. It also has antimicrobial properties that physically purify the room. Other oils (sesame, ghee) are for other deities.

What flowers should be offered to Hanuman ji?+

Red hibiscus (gudhal) is Hanuman's favourite. Red roses, marigold, and red lotus are also accepted. NEVER offer Tulsi to Hanuman - Tulsi is reserved for Vishnu/Krishna forms only.

    Can women sing Hanuman aarti?+

Yes - Hanuman aarti has no gender restrictions. Women across India have sung it for centuries. The only traditional caveat is to avoid singing during menstruation (a personal choice, not a strict rule).

How long does the Hanuman Aarti take to sing?+

The complete Hanuman Aarti (6 verses + closing couplet) takes 3–4 minutes when sung at the proper devotional pace. Singing it in less than 2 minutes means rushing.

What if I miss a day in the 41-day Hanuman aarti vow?+

Tradition says the 41-day count restarts from day 1 if even a single day is missed. This strictness is the source of the practice's power - the discipline itself is the offering. Begin again without guilt.
