The Deity - Subramanya as the Serpent Lord
Kukke Subramanya is dedicated to Lord Subramanya (also called Kartikeya, Murugan or Skanda), the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati and the commander of the gods. Here he is worshipped in a unique form as the king of serpents, identified with the divine serpent Vasuki. According to tradition, Vasuki and other serpents took refuge under Subramanya after the war with the demon Tarakasura, and so the lord is revered as the protector of all serpents and the remover of serpent-related afflictions.
Location and Sacred Setting
The temple lies in the Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, nestled in the lush Western Ghats. The sacred river Kumaradhara flows beside it, and pilgrims bathe in its waters before darshan. The temple sits at the foot of the Kumara Parvata hill, surrounded by dense forest, which gives the shrine a serene, ancient atmosphere considered ideal for serpent worship and dosha remedies.
The Katha - Why Serpents Took Refuge Here
After Lord Subramanya defeated the demon Tarakasura and his brothers, he came to this place and washed his weapons in the Kumaradhara river. There, Vasuki, the serpent king, was performing penance to escape the threat of Garuda, the eagle of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his devotion, Subramanya granted Vasuki refuge and the boon of dwelling with him forever. This is why Kukke Subramanya is worshipped as the lord who shelters serpents and frees devotees from Sarpa Dosha.
What Is Special - Sarpa Samskara

Kukke Subramanya is most famous for the Sarpa Samskara (also called Sarpa Dosha Pooja), a special ritual performed to remove the effects of Kaal Sarp Dosha and the sin of having harmed serpents in this or past lives. Other important sevas include the Ashlesha Bali, performed on the Ashlesha nakshatra, and the Naga Prathishta. These rituals are believed to relieve obstacles in marriage, childbirth, health and progress that are linked to serpent doshas.
Darshan Tips for Pilgrims
Book sevas in advance, as Sarpa Samskara and Ashlesha Bali are performed on fixed days and fill up quickly; the temple website and counters accept bookings. Bathe in the Kumaradhara river before darshan, as this is considered essential purification. Devotees usually fast or eat only light satvik food on the day of the pooja, and wear simple traditional clothes. The nearest town is Subramanya, well connected by road from Mangalore and Bengaluru.
Subramanya Mantra
Devotees chant the Subramanya mantra to seek protection and relief from serpent doshas:
Om Sharavanabhavaya Namah
Another powerful prayer is:
Om Shri Subramanyaya Namah
Chant either mantra 108 times, ideally on a Tuesday or on the Shashthi tithi, facing east with a clean mind. Many devotees also recite the Subramanya Ashtakam (Karavalamba Stotram) for swift relief from troubles.
