Who is Lord Kartikeya - The Many Names

Lord Kartikeya is one of the most-named deities in Hindu cosmology. He is known as:

    • Kartikeya (North India)
    • Murugan (Tamil Nadu - most popular name)
    • Skanda (Sanskrit/classical)
    • Subramanya (Karnataka)
    • Kumara (the eternal youth)
    • Shanmukha / Arumukha (six-faced)
    • Mahasena (great commander)
    • Velayudhan (spear-wielder)
    • Brahmacari (eternal celibate - Tamil tradition)
    • Devasenapati (commander of gods)

Birth story: The demon Tarakasura received a boon that only a son of Shiva could kill him. But Shiva had retreated into deep meditation after Sati's death. The gods needed a way to bring forth Shiva's son.

When Shiva married Parvati, his cosmic 'seed' was so powerful it couldn't be contained by Parvati alone. Agni (fire), then Ganga, carried it to a forest of reeds, where six baby boys emerged. Parvati embraced all six together - they merged into ONE child with six faces. This is Kartikeya - the six-faced cosmic warrior.

    The 6 faces represent:

    • 5 senses + 1 mind (mastery over sensory world)
    • 6 directions (East, West, North, South, Up, Down) - universal protector
    • 6 chakras (mastery over kundalini)
    • 6 enemies of soul (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya)

He killed Tarakasura, then commanded the deva army in cosmic wars.

    Why he matters:

    • Deity of victory in any undertaking
    • Protector of warriors, soldiers, athletes
    • Granter of courage to face challenges
    • Remover of major obstacles (especially after Ganesh's blessing)
    • Especially powerful for young people facing career/exam challenges
    • Tamil tradition's primary male deity

📿 The Vandnaa App has Murugan/Kartikeya devotional content - Skanda Sashti vrat tracker, mantras, and Tamil bhajans.

Skanda Sashti Vrat (6-day November festival):

    • 6 days of fasting (different traditions allow different food levels)
    • Daily Murugan puja
    • Final day (Sashti) - major celebration
    • Reading of Skanda Sashti Kavacham (powerful protective stotra)
    • Many Tamil families do this annually for victory in life

The Skanda Sashti Kavacham: Advanced devotees recite this 244-verse stotra during the 6 days. Considered one of the most protective stotras in Hindu tradition. Available in Tamil and Sanskrit. 90+ minutes for full recitation.

Vegetarian-only rule: Unlike some Devi worship traditions, Murugan worship is STRICTLY vegetarian. Even Tamil Nadu's normally non-veg families abstain during Murugan vrats.

Color significance: Yellow and red - his colors. Black is forbidden. Green for harvest celebrations.

    When to Worship Murugan

For exam success: Daily Tier 1 mantra during exam season. Especially powerful for Tamil-tradition students. Pair with Saraswati for full study-victory.

For court cases / legal victories: Murugan as commander-of-gods is invoked for legal battles. 11 mantras before hearings.

For young people facing career challenges: He is the deity of youth. First job, career change, business launch - Murugan blessings.

For armed forces / police: Protection deity for soldiers, police, security forces. Daily mantra by family members for the soldier's safety.

For sports victory: Athletes especially in martial arts, wrestling, archery. The warrior-deity.

For removing chronic obstacles: When Ganesh has removed initial obstacles but blockages remain, Murugan finishes the job. 41-day commitment.

For removing unmarried-too-long pattern: For adults stuck in unmarried status despite efforts. Tirupparankunram Murugan (married form) particularly helpful.

For health crises (especially among the young): Youth-deity Murugan combined with Mahamrityunjaya for young people's recovery.

For diaspora Tamil families: Maintaining cultural identity through Murugan worship across generations. Annual family Skanda Sashti vrat keeps tradition alive.

For non-Tamil devotees: Murugan accepts all sincere devotees regardless of language/region. North Indian families increasingly include Murugan in their family pantheon.

    Common Mistakes

    1. Eating non-veg during Murugan vrats. Strictly vegetarian - non-negotiable.

    2. Wearing black. Yellow and red only.

    3. Skipping vibhuti tilak. Murugan is Shiva's son - vibhuti is essential.

    4. Not learning Tamil mantras. Even basic Tamil is fine; pure Sanskrit also works. Try to include some Tamil bhajan if possible.

    5. Worshipping casually. Murugan is a fierce warrior-deity. Treat with respect.

    6. Combining with non-veg meals after puja. The merit is lost.

    7. Skipping Skanda Sashti annually. This 6-day November festival is THE Murugan event. Don't miss it.

    8. Not offering peacock feather. His vehicle. Even one feather completes the puja.

    9. Mispronouncing Tamil words. Use audio recordings to learn Tamil pronunciation.

    10. Treating him only as 'Tamil deity'. Murugan is universal. North Indians, Bengalis, anyone can worship.

    Three commitment levels:

    Level 1 - Tuesday weekly:

    • 25-min puja with mantra
    • Sustainable for any devotee

    Level 2 - Daily mantra:

    • Tier 1 mantra 108 daily
    • Plus weekly Tuesday full puja
    • Plus annual Skanda Sashti

Level 3 - Skanda Sashti devotee:

    • Annual 6-day vrat
    • Skanda Sashti Kavacham recitation
    • Aarupadai Veedu pilgrimage once in life

    A final reflection:

Murugan is the deity of the eternally young soul. While we age physically, the soul retains its youthful essence - that essence is Murugan. He grants the courage of youth, the freshness of new beginnings, the will to keep fighting.

In modern life filled with cynicism and weariness, Murugan's energy is medicine. Daily mantra recitation reconnects you with your inner youth.

For Tamil-heritage families, he is the cultural anchor. For non-Tamils, he is the universal warrior-deity.

Begin this Tuesday. Apply vibhuti. Recite 'Om Saravanabhava' 108 times. Offer yellow flower. Take darshan.

    Vel Murugan! Vetri Vel!
