Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga (Srisailam) - Significance & Darshan

Here Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna and Parvati as Bhramaramba Devi. The name joins mallika (jasmine) and Arjuna, reflecting a story of devotion. As a Shakti Peetha, this is where the neck (or upper lip) of Sati is said to have fallen, and Bhramaramba is the powerful Goddess form worshipped alongside Shiva. The Lord and the Mother dwell together here, so devotees receive the grace of both Shiva and Shakti at one shrine.

A beloved katha tells that Kartikeya, hurt that his brother Ganesha married first, left for Kraunch mountain. Grieving, Shiva and Parvati followed him to the hill to be near their son, and there took the form of the Jyotirlinga. Another story tells of the princess Chandravati, a great devotee who worshipped Shiva here with jasmine (mallika) flowers, giving the Lord his name. The temple has been revered for over a thousand years and praised by saints like Adi Shankaracharya.

Srisailam is one of very few places that is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha, so a single yatra honours Shiva and the Goddess together. Unusually, devotees here are allowed to touch the linga during darshan, a rare and intimate blessing. The temple's ancient stone walls are carved with detailed sculptures, and the sacred Pataal Ganga (the Krishna river below) is used for the ritual bath before darshan.

Getting there: the nearest airport is Hyderabad (about 210 km) and the nearest major railhead is Markapur Road or Kurnool; buses and taxis run regularly to Srisailam. Tips: 1. Take a dip in the Pataal Ganga before darshan if you can. 2. Wear simple, modest clothes and carry minimal luggage. 3. Book abhishek or special darshan tickets in advance during festivals. 4. Combine darshan of both Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba Devi. 5. Carry water and sun protection, as the hill paths can be tiring.

from the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram. Reciting Om Namah Shivaya at the shrine, or even remembering Mallikarjuna from afar, is believed to grant peace, the dissolving of sins and the joint blessing of Shiva and Shakti. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is also chanted here for health and protection.

The best months are October to February, when the hill weather is cool and pleasant. Maha Shivratri is the grandest festival here, drawing huge crowds, along with Ugadi and Dussehra when Bhramaramba Devi is specially worshipped. Avoid peak summer (April to June) when the hills are very hot. Early morning darshan is calmest and most peaceful for unhurried prayer.
