Where Is Kashi Vishwanath and Why It Matters
Kashi Vishwanath stands in Varanasi (Kashi), the ancient city on the banks of the holy Ganga in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, where Shiva is worshipped as Vishwanath, the Lord of the Universe. Kashi is called the city of moksha, for it is believed that those who die here attain liberation. To have darshan of Vishwanath in Kashi is among the most cherished aspirations of a Hindu devotee.
Significance of Kashi and Vishwanath
Kashi is regarded as the eternal city of Shiva, said never to be destroyed even at the end of an age, resting on the trishul of Mahadev. Shiva himself is believed to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ear of those who pass away in Kashi, granting them moksha. As one of the holiest jyotirlingas, Vishwanath's darshan is said to wash away lifetimes of sin and bestow peace, devotion and liberation.
The Temple and Vishwanath Dham Corridor
The golden-spired temple was rebuilt in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, and its dome was later gilded with gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In recent years the grand Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor has connected the temple directly to the Ganga ghats, easing the once-narrow approach. Pilgrims now walk from the river to the sanctum through a spacious complex, making darshan far more comfortable for the huge crowds.
Ganga Aarti and Darshan
A visit to Kashi is incomplete without the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat each evening, where priests offer grand lamps to Maa Ganga amid conch and bells. The temple itself is open from early morning, with Mangala Aarti at dawn and several aartis through the day. Many devotees take a holy dip in the Ganga at sunrise, then proceed for Vishwanath darshan with wet clothes and Ganga water for abhishek.
Mantra to Chant at Kashi Vishwanath
Before Vishwanath, devotees chant:
Om Namah Shivaya
A beloved Kashi prayer is:
Om Namo Bhagavate Vishwanathaya
Many recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and call out Har Har Mahadev, the very cry of Kashi. Offering Ganga water, bel leaves and white flowers to the linga, with the chant on the lips, is the heart of worship here.
Yatra Tips and Best Time to Visit
Varanasi is well connected by air, rail and road, with the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport nearby. The best time to visit is October to March; Shravan, Maha Shivratri and Dev Deepawali draw vast crowds. Reach the temple early, deposit phones and bags at the lockers, and wear comfortable, modest clothing. Combine darshan with the Ganga Aarti, a boat ride at dawn and visits to Annapurna and Kal Bhairav temples.
Temple Etiquette and Things to Know
Phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside the sanctum, so use the lockers provided. Dress modestly and remove footwear well before entry. The queues can be long, so be patient and follow the security and priests' guidance. Beware of touts offering 'special darshan'; rely on official channels and the temple's own facilities for a peaceful visit.
