Naina Devi Temple - Sati's Eyes Shakti Peeth Significance & Darshan

Naina Devi is one of the famous Shakti Peeths. According to the katha, when Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body with his Sudarshan Chakra to free Lord Shiva from his grief, Sati's eyes (nain) fell here - giving the place its name. A second, popular legend tells of a cowherd named Naina, whose cow's milk would mysteriously empty over a stone; the Devi appeared in his dream and revealed her presence, and the temple was built where her eyes had fallen.

Inside the sanctum, the Devi is worshipped along with two eyes (nain) symbolising Sati's eyes, set beside her image, which makes this Peeth distinctive. The hilltop can be reached by a stairway climb or a ropeway, the latter offering a breathtaking view of the Gobind Sagar reservoir below. Naina Devi is one of the most popular Devi shrines of the lower Himalayas and forms a key stop on the wider Himachal Shakti Peeth circuit alongside Jwala Ji and Chintpurni.

The temple usually opens early morning around 5 am and closes in the late evening, with morning and evening aartis. Naina Devi lies in Bilaspur district, about 70 km from Bilaspur town and well connected by road from Chandigarh (about 100 km) and Anandpur Sahib; the nearest railhead is Anandpur Sahib. Tips: take the ropeway to save the steep climb if you have elderly companions, carry a light jacket, reach early on weekends, and pair the visit with Anandpur Sahib gurudwara nearby for a richer journey.

The universal Durga chant Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche and the Durga Saptashati are also recited at her feet. Bow before the Devi with folded hands and pray with a clear, sincere mind. It is traditional to offer a red chunri, coconut, flowers and sweets, and many devotees make a mannat here and return to fulfil it after their wish is granted.

Naina Devi draws its largest crowds during Chaitra and Sharad Navratri and the Shravan Ashtami fair, when lakhs of pilgrims climb the hill for darshan. During these festivals the temple stays open for long hours with continuous aartis, bhajan and kirtan. Plan a Navratri visit early, expect long queues on the ascent, and keep children and the elderly close on the busy stairway.
