Why the Peepal Tree Is Sacred

The Peepal (Ashwattha vriksha) is revered as the most sacred of all trees, believed to house the Trimurti - Brahma in its roots, Vishnu in its trunk and Shiva in its leaves. The Bhagavad Gita itself calls it the holiest tree. Goddess Lakshmi is also said to reside in it, especially on Saturdays. Worshipping the Peepal is considered a way of honouring the whole of creation in one form.

Best Day and Time to Worship

Saturday is the most important day for Peepal worship, as it is linked to Shani Dev and Goddess Lakshmi. Offer water in the morning after sunrise, never at night. It is believed that during the day the gods reside in the tree, while at night it should not be touched or circled. Amavasya, Somvati Amavasya and the month of Vaishakh are especially auspicious for its worship.

How to Worship the Peepal - Vidhi

    1. Bathe early and visit the Peepal in the morning after sunrise. 2. Offer water mixed with a little raw milk at the roots, facing east or north. 3. Light a mustard or sesame oil lamp at its base, especially on Saturday. 4. Offer flowers, roli, akshat (rice), and a janeu (sacred thread) if observing a vow. 5. Do a clockwise parikrama (3, 7 or 11 rounds) while chanting the mantra. 6. Fold your hands, bow and pray for peace, health and prosperity. Keep the area around the tree clean and never harm its roots.

    Peepal Tree Mantra

    Peepal Tree Mantra

While offering water and circling the tree, chant this traditional mantra:

Mool tah Brahma rupaaya, madhya tah Vishnu rupine. Agrah tah Shiv rupaaya, Ashwatthaaya namo namah.

Its meaning: salutations to the Ashwattha, in whose roots dwells Brahma, in whose middle dwells Vishnu and in whose top dwells Shiva. A simple Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya may also be chanted for Vishnu, who resides in the trunk.

    Benefits of Peepal Worship

Devotees believe Peepal worship brings the combined blessings of the Trimurti and Lakshmi, easing Shani-related troubles such as Sade Sati. It is said to bring peace of mind, financial stability, relief from ancestral (Pitru) doshas and protection from negativity. The Peepal also releases oxygen generously, so caring for it is both a spiritual and an environmental act of devotion.

    Niyam - Dos and Don'ts

Do: worship and offer water in the daytime, keep the area clean, circle clockwise, and water young Peepal saplings to nurture them. Don't: touch, worship or circle the Peepal at night, as it is considered the time of rest; never cut a living Peepal or pluck its leaves needlessly; avoid plucking leaves on Sundays and Ekadashi, which are considered inauspicious for it. Always approach the tree with respect and a clean, calm mind.
