Who Is Santoshi Mata
Santoshi Mata is the gentle goddess of santosh - satisfaction and contentment. Believed to be the daughter of Lord Ganesha, she rose to wide devotion across homes as the mother who fulfils simple, heartfelt wishes and brings peace to troubled families. Depicted with a kind smile, holding a trishul and a sword, she asks for nothing more than sincere faith and a contented heart. Her worship is simple, affordable and rooted in everyday family life.
The 16 Friday Vrat and Its Meaning
The most loved observance is the sixteen-Friday vrat (solah shukravar vrat). Devotees keep a fast on sixteen consecutive Fridays, with a single sattvik meal and the gur-chana prasad, praying for a specific wish such as marriage, a child, harmony or relief from troubles. A key rule is to avoid all sour (khatta) food and to not give or eat anything sour on Fridays, as this is believed to displease the Mata. When the wish is fulfilled, the vrat is completed with a formal udyapan.
Shukravar Vrat Vidhi - Step by Step
1. On Friday morning, bathe and wear clean clothes; keep a sincere sankalp (resolve) for your wish. 2. Set up a clean spot facing east, place Santoshi Mata's image, and light a ghee lamp and incense. 3. Offer a kalash of water, flowers, and the prasad of gur (jaggery) and roasted chana. 4. Read the Santoshi Mata vrat katha, then recite the chalisa. 5. Eat only one sattvik meal during the day, strictly avoiding sour foods. 6. Perform the aarti in the evening and share the gur-chana prasad with family and children. Keep this routine each Friday until the vrat count is complete.
Santoshi Mata Aarti
After the katha, light the lamp and sing this well-known aarti:
Jai Santoshi Mata, Maiya jai Santoshi Mata. Apne sevak jan ko, sukh-sampatti data. Sundar chir sunhari, Maa dhaaran karti. Sona ka sinhaasan, baithi Maa Santoshi.
Circle the lamp clockwise, offer the gur-chana, and pray for contentment and the fulfilment of your heartfelt wish.
Santoshi Mata Chalisa and Mantra
The Santoshi Mata Chalisa praises her as the giver of contentment and the remover of family sorrow. A sample opening:
Jai Santoshi Maat apaara, mahima teri agam apaara. Sukh-sampatti ki tu data, sankat haran dukh ki maata.
The simple mantra chanted on Fridays is:
Om Shri Santoshi Mahamaye Gajananandadayini, Shukravar Priye Devi Narayani Namostute
or briefly, Om Santoshi Mata Namah, repeated with a calm, grateful heart.
Udyapan and Important Rules
When the sixteen Fridays are complete and the wish is fulfilled, perform the udyapan: offer a special bhog of kheer-puri and gur-chana, and feed eight young boys (considered forms of the divine), giving them the prasad and a small gift. The most important rule throughout is to never eat or serve anything sour on the vrat day, and to keep a calm, content and quarrel-free home, since the Mata blesses peace and gratitude above all.
Benefits of Santoshi Mata Vrat
Devotees keep the vrat for harmony in marriage and family, the blessing of children, relief from financial and household troubles, and success in long-pending wishes. Beyond results, the vrat gently teaches contentment, patience and gratitude, turning a restless heart toward peace. Its low-cost, simple form makes it dear to ordinary families who find in Santoshi Mata a loving, accessible mother.
