Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra - Lyrics & Benefits

The Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra is a revered hymn to Lord Shani (Saturn) composed (krit) by King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama. The story tells that when Shani was about to enter the Krittika nakshatra in a position that would cause famine and suffering for his kingdom, the righteous king Dasharatha worshipped Shani with this powerful prayer. Pleased by his devotion and concern for his people, Shani granted him a boon of relief.

According to tradition, Dasharatha learned from his astrologers that Shani's transit would bring drought and hardship. Rather than fight the planet, the wise king rode to confront Shani with humility and composed this stotra of praise, addressing the deity by his many names. Moved by Dasharatha's selfless love for his subjects, Shani blessed him and promised that anyone who recites this stotra with devotion would be protected from the worst of his hardships. This is why it is a classic remedy for Saturn's troubles.

The stotra praises Shani through a string of his names and forms:

Namah Krishnaya Neelaya shitikanthanibhaya cha. Namah Kalagnirupaya kritantaya cha vai namah.

A further sample verse:

Namo nirmamsadehaya dirghashmashrujataya cha. Namo vishalanetraya shushkodara-bhayanaka.

These verses bow to Shani as the dark one, the blue one, the lord of time and the fierce form, seeking his grace through reverence.

The stotra is a series of *humble salutations (namah) to Lord Shani by his various names and attributes. Rather than asking selfishly, Dasharatha bows again and again, acknowledging Shani's power as the just lord of karma and time. The deeper teaching is that Shani is pleased not by fear or bargaining but by humility, honesty and concern for others*. By surrendering with respect, the devotee turns Shani's strict discipline into protection and grace.

1. On Saturday, bathe and wear clean dark blue or black clothes; face west. 2. Light a sesame (til) oil lamp before Lord Shani and offer black sesame, blue or black flowers and mustard oil. 3. Recite the Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra slowly with humility, ideally seven or eleven times during Sade Sati. 4. Follow with the mantra Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah 108 times if you wish. 5. Close by donating black sesame, urad dal, iron or oil to the needy. Saturdays, Shani Jayanti and Shani Amavasya are the most powerful days.

Reciting the Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra is believed to bring relief during Sade Sati and Dhaiya, reduce the hardships caused by an afflicted Saturn, and remove obstacles in career, finances and health. It is said to grant patience, courage and protection from accidents, debts and legal trouble. As Shani rewards honesty and effort, his grace through this stotra brings success that is slow but deeply rooted and lasting.

Recite with genuine humility, never to harm anyone. On Saturdays, be kind to the poor, the elderly, labourers, crows and dogs, whom Shani protects. Speak the truth and avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food on his day. Lighting a lamp under a Peepal tree and serving the needy are considered among the most powerful supports to this stotra, often more than ritual alone.
