Karna possessed the Shakti, a weapon given to him by Indra in the exchange, told elsewhere in this series, that also cost Karna his protective armour and earrings. The Shakti was guaranteed to kill whomever it struck, but could be used only once, and Karna had preserved it across the entire war specifically for Arjuna, refusing every earlier opportunity to use it against lesser opponents no matter how dangerous they became.
On the fourteenth night of the war, fighting was permitted to continue past sunset in an unusual departure from the day-bound combat that had governed the war until then, and in the darkness and confusion Ghatotkacha, Bhima's son by the rakshasi Hidimba, told in this series' account of that marriage, unleashed his full rakshasa capability on the Kaurava forces.
Ghatotkacha's assault by night was devastating in a way daylight combat rarely allowed for: his rakshasa nature made him formidable specifically after dark, and he tore through Kaurava ranks with an intensity that drove Duryodhana himself to despair, the Kaurava army suffering losses severe enough that its collapse seemed imminent.

Duryodhana, watching his army collapse under Ghatotkacha's night assault, turned to Karna and demanded he use whatever means necessary to stop the rakshasa immediately, effectively forcing the exact decision Karna had spent the entire war trying to avoid.
Karna understood precisely what he was being asked to do: spend the one weapon that could guarantee Arjuna's death on a different opponent entirely, permanently forfeiting his single surest path to ending the man he had waited years to face directly. He hesitated, weighing his personal ambition against his duty to Duryodhana's immediate survival, and ultimately chose duty, launching the Shakti at Ghatotkacha.
Ghatotkacha, struck, expanded his own body to an enormous size before dying, deliberately falling in a way calculated to crush as many Kaurava soldiers beneath him as possible, extracting a final measure of damage even in death - a detail the epic treats as consistent with his rakshasa nature rather than as unusual cruelty.
कृष्ण की गुप्त राहत
The Mahabharata records Krishna's own reaction to Ghatotkacha's death as strikingly different from the general grief on the Pandava side: Krishna is described as visibly relieved and even joyful, an unexpected response to a devastating loss that Arjuna, confused and upset, directly questions him about.
Krishna's explanation is specific: the Shakti was the one weapon that could have killed Arjuna outright, and its use against Ghatotkacha meant Karna no longer possessed any guaranteed means of ending the war's outcome in his own favour, effectively securing Arjuna's survival for the war's remaining days at the cost of Ghatotkacha's life.
Ghatotkacha's death is therefore framed by the epic itself not as a simple tragedy but as a strategic turning point engineered, in Krishna's own reading, by the situation's pressures rather than by any single villain's malice: Duryodhana's demand and Karna's sense of obligation together spent the one weapon that mattered most, sparing Arjuna without either side fully understanding, in the moment, what the exchange had actually cost and saved.
