Ahoi Ashtami - Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi & Niyam for Children

    What Is Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami is a day-long vrat kept by mothers for the long life, health and prosperity of their children, especially sons in tradition, though today many keep it for all children. The fast is dedicated to Ahoi Mata, a compassionate mother goddess form of the Divine Mother. Mothers stay without food and water through the day and break the fast only after sighting the stars or moon in the evening. It is a tender vrat rooted entirely in a mother's love and prayer.

    Tithi, Timing and Month

Ahoi Ashtami falls on the Ashtami (eighth day) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, usually in October or November. It comes about eight days before Diwali and four days after Karwa Chauth, forming part of the same festive stretch. The vrat is kept from sunrise and broken in the evening, traditionally after seeing stars; in some regions mothers wait for the moonrise. Always confirm the exact date and star or moon sighting time with your local Panchang for the year.

    Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha

Long ago, a woman went into the forest to dig clay for her home before Diwali. While digging near a den, her spade accidentally killed a Sehi (porcupine or, in some versions, a lion cub), and the grieving mother animal cursed her. Soon the woman lost her own children one after another and was struck with deep sorrow. An elder advised her to worship the goddess Ahoi (the mother of all young ones) and to seek forgiveness with a sincere heart. The woman drew Ahoi Mata and her cubs on the wall and prayed for the wellbeing of all children. Pleased by her remorse and devotion, Ahoi Mata forgave her and blessed her with healthy, long-lived children. Since then, mothers keep this vrat each year and worship Ahoi Mata for the protection of their offspring.

    Ahoi Ashtami Puja Vidhi

    Ahoi Ashtami Puja Vidhi

    1. Wake before sunrise, bathe and take a sankalp (vow) to keep the nirjala (waterless) fast for your children. 2. On a clean wall or paper, draw or place an image of Ahoi Mata with her cubs; many also keep a Syahu mata necklace or a silver Ahoi item. 3. Place a kalash of water, and keep grains, roli, rice and karwa nearby. 4. In the evening, light a diya and listen to or read the Ahoi Ashtami katha with folded hands. 5. Offer water and bhog (puri, halwa, sweets) to Ahoi Mata and pray for your children's long life. 6. At the sight of stars (or moon, per local custom), offer arghya, then break your fast. Elders of the family are touched at the feet for blessings before eating.

Who Keeps This Vrat and Why

This vrat is kept mainly by mothers for the long life, health and success of their children. Traditionally it was observed for sons, but today many mothers keep it lovingly for all their children, including daughters. Women without children or those wishing for the wellbeing of their families also observe it. The heart of the vrat is a mother's selfless prayer - she goes without food and water all day so that her children may live long and flourish.

    Significance and Benefits

Ahoi Ashtami is believed to bless children with long life, good health and protection from harm, and to bring peace, harmony and prosperity to the home. Beyond the ritual, it deepens the bond between mother and child and renews a mother's prayerful intent for her family. Observing the vrat with patience, devotion and a forgiving, humble heart, as the katha teaches, is considered its true benefit.
