Where Is Baidyanath Dham

Baidyanath (also spelt Vaidyanath) is the Jyotirlinga at Deoghar in Jharkhand, a town whose very name means 'the abode of the gods'. The temple, known as Baba Baidyanath Dham, is the central shrine in a large complex of twenty-one temples. It is one of the most visited Jyotirlingas in eastern India and is also counted among the Shakti Peethas, where the heart of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen, making the site doubly sacred.

Shiva the Divine Healer

The name Vaidyanath means 'lord of physicians', for here Shiva is worshipped as the divine healer who cures disease and suffering of body and mind. The Legend of Ravana

According to the Shiva Purana, the demon king Ravana performed severe penance and offered his ten heads to please Shiva, asking to carry the linga to Lanka. Shiva granted it on one condition - the linga must not be set down on the way. The gods, fearing Lanka would become invincible, made Ravana need to set it down, and Lord Vishnu (as a boy) held it, but it became fixed at this very spot. Unable to lift it again, Ravana pressed it with his thumb, and Shiva remained here forever as Baidyanath.

Shravani Mela and the Kanwar Yatra

Deoghar hosts the Shravani Mela, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, through the holy month of Shravan (July-August). Millions of kanwariyas dressed in saffron walk barefoot for about 105 km from Sultanganj, carrying holy water from the Ganga in decorated kanwars. Throughout the year, Mondays (Somvar) see special crowds, as Monday is the day dedicated to Lord Shiva.
