Where Is Nageshwar
Nageshwar is the Jyotirlinga located near Dwarka in Gujarat, on the route between Dwarka town and the island shrine of Bet Dwarka, in the Saurashtra region close to the Arabian Sea. It is widely identified as the Nageshwar (Nagesha) Jyotirlinga praised in the Shiva Purana. The temple is marked by a towering 25-metre statue of a seated Lord Shiva that is visible from a distance and has become a famous landmark of the coast.
Shiva as Nagesha
The name Nageshwar means 'lord of the nagas (serpents)', and here Shiva is revered as the protector who saves devotees from poison, snakebite, fear and negative forces. The swayambhu linga rests in an underground sanctum, giving darshan a deep, cave-like sanctity. Snakes (naga) in Hindu thought represent hidden dangers and the cycles of karma; worshipping Nageshwar is believed to grant fearlessness and protection from all forms of visha (poison), both literal and emotional.
The Legend of Daruka
The Shiva Purana tells of a demoness named Daruka and her demon husband Daruk who terrorised the land and imprisoned a devout Shiva worshipper named Supriya along with other captives. When Supriya led the prisoners in chanting Om Namah Shivaya, the demons attacked him, but Lord Shiva appeared from the earth as a blazing Jyotirlinga and destroyed the evil forces. Granting the prayers of his devotee, Shiva chose to remain here as Nageshwar, the ever-present guardian against danger.
What Makes Nageshwar Special

Nageshwar is cherished as the Jyotirlinga of protection - devotees pray here for safety from poison, illness, accidents, enemies and negative energy. Its setting near Dwarka, one of the four Char Dham and the city of Lord Krishna, lets pilgrims combine the darshan of Shiva and Krishna in one journey. The giant seated Shiva statue, the peaceful underground sanctum and the nearby sea make Nageshwar both spiritually powerful and serene to visit.
Darshan and Yatra Tips
The temple usually opens around 6:00 am, closes for a midday rest, and reopens in the evening, closing by about 9:00 pm; the aarti times are especially auspicious for darshan. The temple lies about 16 km from Dwarka, which has its own railway station, with the nearest airport at Jamnagar. It is best visited together with Dwarkadhish temple and Bet Dwarka. Steps lead down into the sanctum, so move carefully, and the cooler months from October to March are most comfortable.
The Shiva Mantra to Chant
The very mantra that saved the devotee Supriya is the one chanted here:
Om Namah Shivaya
For protection from poison, fear and negativity, devotees also recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.
Offer water, bel patra and white flowers to the linga, praying with faith for the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
Festivals at Nageshwar

Maha Shivratri is the most important festival, when the temple is decorated and thousands gather for night-long worship and abhishek. The holy month of Shravan sees daily streams of devotees offering water and bel patra. Nag Panchami, dedicated to serpent worship, holds special meaning at the 'lord of nagas' shrine. As Nageshwar lies near Dwarka, the festivals of Janmashtami in the region also bring large numbers of pilgrims who visit both shrines.
