Who Is Kuber
Kuber is the Dhanadhipati - the treasurer of the gods and the lord of wealth, riches and material abundance. He is the guardian (dikpala) of the north direction and the keeper of the nine treasures (nidhis). Depicted as a stout figure adorned with jewels, holding a mace and a pot of gems, Kuber is not worshipped for greed but for the honest, stable flow of wealth needed to sustain a household and to perform dharma. He is most often worshipped together with Goddess Lakshmi.
Kuber and Lakshmi - Why Both
Lakshmi and Kuber are worshipped together because they play complementary roles. Lakshmi is the goddess who grants wealth and prosperity, while Kuber is the treasurer who stores and protects it, ensuring that wealth, once gained, stays and grows rather than slipping away. Worshipping both is believed to invite not just income but the wisdom to retain and manage it. This is why Kuber puja is central to Dhanteras and Diwali, the great festivals of wealth.
Kuber Yantra and Its Use
The Kuber Yantra is a sacred geometric diagram inscribed with numbers and Kuber's mantra, designed to attract and stabilise wealth. It is usually placed in the north of the home, office, locker or cash box, ideally facing the worshipper. Before use, the yantra is cleansed with Ganga jal and energised by chanting the Kuber mantra. Keeping an energised Kuber Yantra in the place where money or valuables are stored is believed to draw steady prosperity and remove obstacles to income.
Kuber Mantra
The core wealth mantra of Kuber is:
Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhana-dhanyadipataye Dhana-dhanya Samriddhim Me Dehi Dapaya Svaha
A shorter daily mantra is:
Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shreem Kuberaya Namah
Chant the mantra 108 times on a yellow or rudraksha mala, facing north, ideally on a Friday or during Dhanteras and Diwali, while keeping the mind on honest, lawful prosperity.
Kuber Aarti
Light a ghee lamp before Kuber, ideally with Lakshmi, and sing:
Om Jai Yaksha Kuber hare, swami jai Kuber hare. Sharan padi hai aapki, sab sankat dukh hare. Dhan-daata dukh-haari, vaibhav ke daata. Uttar disha ke swami, nidhi ke rakhwaata.
Circle the flame clockwise, then bow and pray for steady wealth, freedom from debt and prosperity for the family.
Kuber Wealth Puja Vidhi
1. On Friday, Dhanteras or Diwali, bathe and wear clean yellow clothes; face north. 2. Place Kuber with Lakshmi, and set the Kuber Yantra near your cash box or locker. 3. Light a ghee lamp, offer yellow flowers, haldi, akshat, and sweets such as kheer or peda. 4. Place a few coins or notes before the deity as a symbol of treasure. 5. Chant the Kuber mantra 108 times, then read the aarti. 6. Pray for steady, honest wealth and keep the energised yantra where money is stored. Dhanteras and Diwali night are the most powerful times for this puja.
Benefits of Kuber Worship
Worshipping Kuber is believed to attract steady wealth, remove financial obstacles and debts, and bring stability and growth to income and business. Together with Lakshmi, his grace helps not only in earning but in retaining and wisely managing wealth. Devotees also seek his blessing for success in trade, new ventures and a prosperous, debt-free household.
