    What Is Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri is the great night of Shiva, the most important festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the night when Shiva performed the cosmic dance of Tandava and when he united with Maa Parvati. Unlike most festivals celebrated by day, Shivratri is kept through the night with fasting, vigil and worship, making it a deeply personal night of devotion and inner stillness.

    Tithi and When It Falls

Maha Shivratri falls on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna, that is, the fourteenth night of the waning moon just before the new moon. In the Gregorian calendar this usually comes in February or March. The vrat and main puja are observed on the night when Chaturdashi prevails during nishita kaal (midnight). Please confirm the exact date and shubh muhurat for 2027 on the Vandnaa Panchang, as the tithi timing shifts slightly each year.

    Significance and Katha

A beloved katha tells of a poor hunter who, lost in a forest at night, climbed a bilva (bel) tree to escape wild animals. Through the night he unknowingly dropped bilva leaves and water onto a Shivling below while staying awake out of fear. Pleased by this unintentional all-night worship and fast, Shiva granted him liberation. The story teaches that sincere wakefulness, simple offerings and a fasting heart please Shiva more than wealth or ritual grandeur.

    Four-Prahar Puja Vidhi

Shivratri puja is traditionally done in four prahar (quarters) through the night: 1. Bathe and take the sankalp (vow) of the vrat in the morning; keep a fast through the day. 2. In the evening, bathe the Shivling with water, then milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (panchamrit), reciting Shiva mantras. 3. Offer bilva (bel) leaves, dhatura, bhang, white flowers, chandan and akshat, and light a ghee lamp and dhoop. 4. Perform abhishek and aarti in each of the four prahar through the night, chanting Om Namah Shivaya. 5. Read the Shivratri katha and stay awake (jagran) in devotion. 6. Break the fast the next morning after the final puja, offering gratitude to Shiva.

    Mantras for Maha Shivratri

The simplest and most powerful is the Panchakshari mantra:

    Om Namah Shivaya

For protection, health and victory over fear, devotees chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra:

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.

Chant either 108 times on a rudraksha mala during each prahar to deepen the night's worship.

Vrat Rules and What to Eat

Devotees keep either a nirjala (waterless) fast or a phalahari fast of fruits, milk and water through the day and night. Avoid grains, rice, wheat, regular salt, onion and garlic; sendha namak (rock salt), fruits, milk, sabudana and singhare ka atta are allowed. Maintain cleanliness, speak truthfully, avoid anger, and spend the night in chanting and remembrance rather than idle entertainment.
